Can the Kinect detect the movements that would be required for a FPS game?
* forward * backward * left * right * diagonal (in the 4 above directions) * strafe left and right * crouching * all the above movements in a slower speed. the default speed for most FPS games is running, but the player would need to be able to walk slowly too
I've been looking at virtual reality stuff today and it seems that the two things that can detect those movements (omnidirectional treadmill and the VirtuSphere (massive hamsterball)) are impractical and expensive.
It CAN do it, but whether it would be practical is another thing entirely.
I mean, look at turning. If I turn left or right, Kinect could feasibly pick that up, but I won't be looking at the screen anymore! And you'd need an awful lot of space to get the best out of it. Given my stride length, I'd take one or maybe two steps forward on the diagonal, and be out of range!
