@belmont I didn’t play the Wii version of Crimson Butterfly. I played it on the Xbox. I’ve always been curious about that one but the original version of CB is considered one of the greatest horror games of all time. I would put the first game up there too.
I never played Eternal Darkness. I slept on that one and could kick myself for doing so. I was told to get it but my cheap self was trying to wait for a sale. I should have bought it. I’m hoping Nintendo releases more GameCube games on the switch or their next system. I would love to give it a go.
I remember Eternal Darkness, it's a bit rough but it's a very intense and original game and you can play it thrice differently.
@belmont You need to approach Project Zero/Fatal Frame with open mind, they're slow but it makes them more real and intense. You need to explore and read the files to get immersed in the story. Definitely, you can't approach them as horror shooters and you can't rush them as we rush many games.
Take your time in the first sections to get used to the camera. It's like a weapon, it has different films (ammunition) and lenses (power and side effects). You can get more points depending on the distance and angle. The damage I make with a camera obscura is more satisfying than shooting a fire weapon. In Maiden of Black Water, Ren's camera has a 4-shoot and 8-shoot unlockables that make very easy practising fatal frames. Fatal frames occur if you make photos when the ghost is vulnerable and the camera is revved up. You are able to shoot a combo then and that is one of the most satisfying things I've ever experienced playing video games. Yes, the gameplay is slow but it's very satisfying and manageable.
So far, I’m on Phase 4 and I’m LOVING it! Waited such a long time, thought I’d never get to play this one. Interesting characters, nice level design, and a good story at the moment. I’m taking my time and not rushing the game.
It’s reminding me of a mix of the older games along with the newest one Maiden of the Black Water. It reminds me of the older games as it has more of the style of the original trilogy, but the graphical upgrade and playing through multiple characters like V.
What are all your thoughts on the game and where are you currently at? Has anybody finished the game yet?
@EvilSilentFrame I told you that you'll love it! Take it slow 😉. I pre-ordered the digital deluxe edition but I haven't played it yet. I played the original on Wii (Japanese disc with English fan-made patch) and I'm near getting 100% in Maiden of Black Water on Xbox and loving the remaster more than the original Wii U game. Then I'll be free to play the Mask of the Lunar Eclipse remaster.
@Banjo- I also had preordered the digital deluxe edition. I haven’t looked at the extras yet. I don’t want to spoil the game on me. I did the deluxe edition on V as well. Playing through IV, I can see myself going through this game again and revisiting V. Might be joining you on the 100% completion.
@EvilSilentFrame Still early on in the game (Phase 2). Not a fan of the character switching, kinda suck at snapping good pictures of environmental ghosts, and it has taken some time to adjust to not using the right stick to try and constantly adjust the camera (the game plays best when you move around with the left stick and use the camera to look around environments; probably a remnant of its origins as a Wii game), but all the same, the formula is still effective, and I still feel an almost constant sense of dread when playing.
As you probably know, I'm playing on the Switch. I did start playing docked, since I felt like it was probably more appropriate, but, honestly, horror games like this are even more effective when played in the more intimate context of handheld mode. And the speakers are good enough the OLED model that I don't even feel the need to use headphones.
@Kaloudz you’re going to love it. With as big of a fan you are of the series, this one sits nicely along with the first three games. Feels much more like a classic PZ/FF game than Maiden.
@Ryall yes it certainly does have the tight corridor giving it more of a claustrophobic feel to it. I think since the Wii was more of a limited piece of machinery, you’re outside less. Part V certainly had some small rooms and tight corridors as well, but there was a lot of more open spaces in that game compared to IV. I agree, they do feel different from each other.
@Ralizah the controls are a bit different. Probably because of being a Wii game like you said. I am able to move around with my left stick and move my camera around with my right. Is the switch version reversed? That’s how the originals were and I had to go into settings to change that around, especially when using the camera in first person mode. I was missing a bunch of shots of the environmental ghosts as well. I’m further into the game now, either Phase 7 or 8 now and I’m much better at the controls.
I also am not a fan of switching between characters. That’s where I think this game feels more like V compared to the first two games. I would like playing as one main character. Playing as multiple characters kind of takes me out of it. You’re vested in that character and what’s going to happen next, then it pulls you from that character to a different one. However, this one feels much more closely tied to one story compared to V where all the characters in that one though they were exploring a lot of the same areas as each other, their stories felt less connected to each other.
@EvilSilentFrame No, it's not reversed. I just find that shifting the camera manually is sluggish enough to be frustrating. But the camera already follows your character when you're running (or, in this case, walking slightly faster, lol), so I've just taken to not using the right stick except for when using the camera.
On the plus side, the motion controls when aiming the camera make for much smoother aiming. Although given you can lock onto ghosts, I'm not sure how necessary they are. Maybe once the ghosts start darting around more.
So far I've mainly been exploring the same few areas as the three characters I've played to date, so I'm hoping new environments open up soon.
In terms of how it feels, I'd say the closest comparison I'd make it to Fatal Frame 3, since that also had this combination of mostly in-door settings and multiple playable characters.
Nintendo Switch FC: SW-2726-5961-1794 Currently Playing: Nothing
@Ralizah I had V for the Wii U and I didn’t like the motion controls. Did you have the Wii U version of V? If so how do you think the motion controls for this one compare to the Wii U motion controls? The lock onto ghosts does help at times but then some of them almost teleport or blink into another spot around you so the lock doesn’t work well on those types of ghosts.
The “running “ in the game is kind of comical. I was like “that’s a run?” LOL I know a lot of people don’t like it but I don’t mind it. I think the character being on the slow side only heightens the tension in the game.
It is kind of like part 3 by using different characters and playing mostly in doors. The that’s one I really want to play again. I remember opening up doors and being back in the Himuro Mansion but the order was different. There were a lot of complaints about reusing old rooms but I kind of liked it. But again I wanted one main character to play as. That one also had “safe” areas kind of like V. I want the tension to continue. I don’t want to be back home and be safe. I never felt safe in I or II, that might be another reason why those are my favorites.
@EvilSilentFrame VERY excited to play it. I loved all the ones I've played but given my preference for 2, if this sits in with the first three as far as play is concerned, that's good news to me.
Well, my time of not taking you seriously is coming to a middle - Cpt Reynolds
@Kaloudz my preference was with 2 as well, but 4 is really good so far. I’m getting close to the end. I just want to keep playing but I don’t want to rush it. I keep visiting some of the same rooms over and over trying to collect items and as many notes as I can read. The story has sucked me in and I’m hooked. I think since you’re a fan of the older ones, you’ll love this one.
Project Zero 2 Wii Edition was the first I played. I didn't know anything about it, I just was told it's a horror game and when I played it, I was hooked. I was engrossed, running like in a nightmare, speed designed to not break the atmosphere. Rushing scared, following a dimmed path with few lanterns around the corners, hearing steps, subtleties and distorted sounds... with camera in hand.
@Kaloudz oh yes, there are definitely some spooky ones in this game. I don’t think it’s as creepy as 2, but it’s creepier than 5. There’s some spooky ones and then there’s some interesting cool designs for others. A few jump scares but mostly relies on your typical atmospheric psychological horror.
@Banjo- I never played the Wii version of CB. It looked great. The visuals were a nice update from the original. I wonder if we do get a CB on current platforms, would it be the original version they would pretty up, or would it be the Wii version? Did you ever go back and play the PS2 Xbox version of CB?
@Kaloudz it’s kind of rare for a jump scare to get me. I usually remain calm unless it’s something in real life. If I feel something’s wrong, I’m out of there. I don’t make a scene, I just pack my stuff up and I quickly and quietly leave lol. This game has one of the best jump scares in the series. I won’t say anymore than that because I don’t want to spoil anything. But there’s one in particular I thought was done really well plus a few other surprises that play with your mind. Where you question if something just moved or if something was facing a different direction a second ago. They did a nice job with the game so far. Again I’m not done with it but what I’ve played so far I am loving.
@EvilSilentFrame I'm glad that you are enjoying Mask of the Lunar Eclipse so much. I've never played the original version of Crimson Butterfly. That's a good question, would they remaster the original or the Wii version? I think that they should do the Wii version because it has much more content as stated on page 1. I have almost completed Maiden of Black Water 100%, so I shared what I've been noting down here for anyone else who dares: 😉
