Talking Point: Should Xbox Bring Back Limited Edition Consoles?

Throughout the Xbox 360 and Xbox One eras, Microsoft was prolific when it came to limited edition consoles. Pretty much every major release from Xbox Game Studios would have an epic console to pair with it - from the likes of Halo 3 way back in 2007 right through to Gears 5 the year before Xbox Series X came out. But, this generation has been a little different.

So far, there's only been one limited edition console that the masses could go out and buy for Xbox Series X|S (aside from a low-run SpongeBob console limited to Best Buy US). That was Microsoft's sleek Halo Infinite system (pictured above), and it launched all the way back in 2021. The team celebrated 20 years of Halo in a big way, and we still think this is a very nice looking console that provides a welcome alternative to the standard Series X design.

In the years since, though, Microsoft has opted against building any more proper limited edition consoles. Sure, we get the odd system that players can enter to win via Xbox sweepstakes, and sure, there are a few of those limited edition console wraps out in the wild now. But as for proper custom-built consoles that are made in large numbers? They're basically non-existent these days!

And that's a real shame, we reckon. Sure, we get that this is a bit of a niche market and it's not a way of shifting a ton more consoles, but hardcore fans like us do have more of a reason to double dip when limited edition systems regularly drop. They also feel like a bit of a celebration when major new games land; controllers and other accessories just don't cut it - there are millions of Xbox controllers out there as it is.

So, is this something you think about from time to time? Would you have liked Xbox to make more LE consoles this generation? Honestly, it became so commonplace during the last few generations that it does feel like a bit of a let-down to have only seen one of these systems in the last five years. But, it could just us that thinks that way!
