The Quarry (Xbox Series X|S)

Supermassive Games has become the de-facto studio for cinematic, choice-driven horror - and we deemed The Quarry a bit of a return to form for the team. Those Dark Pictures titles are good fun, but The Quarry delivers more on the horror front and we had a real good time with it a couple years back.

If you're not aware of what The Quarry is all about, you're basically tasked with navigating a bunch of horrifying scenarios while trying to keep as many of the teenage cast alive and kicking. There are some famous actors making up that cast too, so if you're a horror film buff you'll likely spot some familiar faces. How many of these naïve teens can you keep alive? There's only one way to find out!

Resident Evil 2 (Xbox One)

What more can we say about this one? We've gushed about Resident Evil 2 Remake numerous times since Capcom brought the famous R.P.D station back to life five years ago - this is an impeccable remake and stands as one of last-gen's best games - never mind best horror games!

You can expect stellar third person shooting, memorable encounters, a fantastic explorable location, satisfying puzzling and lots of fright in RE2, so, what are you waiting for? Bonus - the team just added this one to Xbox Game Pass, which means you don't even have to pay up if you're already a subscriber. Winner winner, Zombie dinner!

Scorn (Xbox Series X|S)

Is skulking around strangely organic, fleshy video game environments your idea of a good time? If so, you really can't do any better than Scorn. Ebb Software's horror adventure has its issues, but being the most disgustingly slimy, squelchy video game environment perhaps ever made is certainly one of its high points.

Scorn is one of the most unique titles on this list, and for that reason alone it's worth a play for any horror game aficionados out there. Frustrating at times — yes — but supremely memorable and intensely gruesome. Not for the squeamish, this first-person puzzlebox is one twisted adventure that's there for diving into on Xbox Game Pass.

Slender: The Arrival (Xbox One)

An evolved version of the original Slender Man game, Slender: The Arrival is one of those horror titles that leans heavily into panic-inducing audio cues to deliver on the spooks. Seriously - headphones cranked, concentration levels to the max and this can be one of the scariest experiences on Xbox.

There's just something about that tension ratcheting up each time you find a clue and progress, and Slender delivers a satisfyingly scary gameplay loop as a result. The Xbox One version of this game has improved visuals over the original, but a recent Xbox Series X|S UE5 remake takes that one step further. Whichever way you play, make sure you have a spare pillow on hand.

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (Xbox Series X|S)

Last but not least, we've thrown The Texas Chain Saw Massacre onto this list. Not only is it our sole multiplayer entry, it's also our only licensed game here - and that last part is a big reason behind our adoration of this Game Pass title.

Multiplayer horror games can be tough for newcomers, but The Texas Chain Saw Massacre does such a good job at capturing the famous film franchise that it's good fun even you are being constantly mauled by the Slaughter family. Authentic to the smallest of details and a looker to boot, this online horror game is worth a look - especially if you're a fan of the films or other genre mainstays like Dead by Daylight.

The fact that this title is still on Game Pass with a healthy player base makes it an easy recommendation as well!
