This week, Guildford-based studio Fuse Games received a plethora of extremely positive reviews for its Burnout-esque Star Wars: Galactic Racer. Currently, the roguelite racer boasts an 88 rating on Metacritic, with our very own Fraser Gilbert also giving it a big thumbs up.

But the praise doesn't stop there, as Digital Foundry has also hopped on the hype train and reported "nigh-on flawless performance on all consoles - including Series S". High praise from the video game boffins!

"Star Wars: Galactic Racer succeeds as both a technical showcase for Unreal Engine 5 and an entertaining arcade racing experience. It delivers robust performance and impressive visuals across all platforms, and comes highly recommended for fans of fast-paced racing action."

Their analysis revealed the Xbox Series X version of Galactic Racer performed almost identical to the base PS5 performance. Stating they deliver "an exceptionally stable 60fps alongside crisp image quality driven by Unreal's native TSR upscaling" at an internal resolution of ~1296p in its sole graphics mode.

"Xbox Series X matches the performance and visual parity of the standard Sony console, maintaining solid frame-rates and clean output."

DF goes on to discuss the expected downgrades on the Xbox Series S, but ultimately, how "sensible" compromises deliver "a solid frame-rate and satisfactory image quality" on the lesser powered console. I don't know about you, but that sounds like good news for Series S owners.

"However, the Series S requires significant compromises, substituting ray-traced Lumen for baked lighting and lowering the internal resolution to ~864p to preserve smooth performance. The GI presentation is downgraded, with less clear directionality and coarser GI detail, though the changes can be extremely noticeable in some scenes and less so in others. Ultimately, it's a sensible cutback for Series S in service of a solid frame-rate and satisfactory image quality."

As far as performance goes, Galactic Racer is a gosh-darned looker of a game. Something I've noticed from most of the new Star Wars releases is that they nail the vibe and atmosphere of the franchise. Digital Foundry even state that "beyond raw graphics, Galactic Racer captures the visual language of the science-fiction franchise". They then heap praise on the game for its Burnout inspiration, singling out the "spectacular" destruction system which sees vehicles explode in a gorgeous fashion.

You can have a gander at these console comparisons in either the video at the top of this article or via the Digital Foundry link below. Star Wars: Galactic Racer is out now on Xbox Series X|S, and baggable through the Xbox Store from £49.99 / $59.99.
