When we were compiling the usual list of "games coming to Xbox next week" prior to Saturday, one of the games that really caught our attention was Sprawl Zero, which arrives for Xbox Series X and Series S on September 8th.
The reason? Well, they describe it as being "a fast-paced shooter inspired by the Golden Age of 2000s FPS", and you definitely get the 2000s vibe from looking at the initial footage and screenshots.
Games such as Halo, Half-Life 2 and F.E.A.R. are even described as direct inspirations here:
From what we can tell, this is a purely single-player affair that features handcrafted levels with "multiple paths, verticality, and alternate approaches, rewarding experimentation and replayability". The demo is also currently live on Steam and has an "Overwhelmingly Positive" rating ahead of launch, so that seems extremely promising!
Sprawl Zero will be available at some point on September 8th on the Xbox Store, and you can wishlist it already, but there's no pre-order option as things stand. It's also confirmed as an Xbox Play Anywhere title, meaning you'll get the PC version for free if you buy it for Xbox Series X and/or Xbox Series S.
We'll leave you with more details and screenshots down below.
Sprawl Zero is a first-person shooter inspired by 2000s console FPS games. Both the aesthetics and design sensibility call back to the Golden Age, where the genre evolved from shooting in corridors to building worlds.
Handcrafted levels feature multiple paths, verticality, and alternate approaches, rewarding experimentation and replayability. Push aggressively, play tactically from cover, or dominate encounters through physics-based combat. Player agency was a fundamental pillar of Y2K design, and Sprawl Zero accommodates players to find their own niche.
