Roundup: Here's What The Previews Are Saying About Final Fantasy VII Revelation 1

We've got the early word on Final Fantasy VII Revelation, with several outlets saying pretty much the same thing: that it's massive!

Previews started flooding in today for the upcoming JRPG that'll serve as the climactic conclusion to the Final Fantasy VII remake trilogy. The general vibe is indeed, that there just wasn't enough time to check out everything on offer, but what's new? It's a Final Fantasy game.

Looks like critics were given access to a 50 minute demo at a recent Square Enix event, where they took control of the Highwind and played out a section from somewhere within Chapter 4 of the RPG. So, here's what the previews are saying about Final Fantasy VII Revelation:

Push Square

"My demo pulled me in about a billion different directions: I could have gone to the Golden Saucer to try out the returning snowboarding minigame; I could have collected medallions for a character called Freddie in return for rewards; I could have focused on rescuing Chocobos to expand the number of races available to me...I had an hour to play; I was told that if I was to complete everything in this area, it’d take me somewhere in the region of 20 hours."

Nintendo Life

"Whenever I tried to get back on the main path, something was waiting to distract me. I'd rather not go into too much detail about how much of my already limited playtime I spent chasing down sleeping kitties for the Wutai 'Picture Purr-fect Photo Event' mission, but it was a lot. Hey, what's the point of the new grappling hook if not to find sunbathing cats on rooftops?"

IGN

"You get a good sense for the scope and scale of Revelation and how dense its map is from the sky, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't worried about it being bloated with side content like a checklist-y open world game. Much of it is optional, of course, and I'm not going to complain about having more to do if it either brings out the best in gameplay or deepens our understanding of its world. And you damn well know I'm going to lose entire days to Queen's Blood and its new storyline in Revelation (Sephiroth can wait). The lesson I hope Square Enix got from Rebirth is that this kind of content shouldn't be used as padding wedged into the main questline. But my faith is a little shaken with how disruptive these things were in my demo time."

Vice

"Each character truly has a unique combat style that is equally fun in its own right. As a result, I genuinely found myself forgetting to switch characters or pause battles to use spells because I was having so much fun with each character’s basic playstyle. However, the new FITS system is a complete game changer. Not only does it allow your characters to switch between the four classes: Warrior, Black Mage, Knight, and Summoner, but it also gives you much more freedom to experiment with their builds."

Metro

"But one thing was certainly obvious: with its instantly available open world and a vast store of new side quests and explorations on the map, Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will be even more of a time-sucker than the previous two games in the trilogy. It should represent the ultimate realisation of Square Enix’s visionary reimaging of Final Fantasy 7 and the end of the most ambitious remake project ever attempted."

There you have it, folks. Sounds like there was simply too much to do and too little time, but overall most are happy with the combat on offer.

Both the prequels, Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade and Rebirth, are still rocking all-time discounted prices right now on the Xbox Store. So, if this preview got you feeling a lil' excited, then perhaps you'd best pick the other two up whilst they're on the cheap.

Final Fantasy VII Revelation will launch onto Xbox Series X|S on April 8, 2026.
