Roundup: The First Reviews Have Dropped For Onimusha: Way Of The Sword, And They're Very Good 1

Well, well, well, reviews are in for Onimusha: Way of the Sword, and they're looking pretty darned good!

Capcom's latest title revives the dark samurai series for a modern audience, and it's currently holding a stellar Metacritic rating of 88 on Nintendo Switch 2, 86 on PS5, 82 on PC. It's yet to be rated for Xbox, with only two reviews available right now, bring the overall score to a whopping 86!

So, how about we get stuck into what the critics are saying about Onimusha: Way of the Sword:

Hey Poor Player (10/10)

"Onimusha: Way of the Sword is a visually stunning revival that successfully brings Capcom’s classic franchise into the modern era using the RE Engine. Musashi injects a refreshing sense of personality into dark fantasy Kyoto, especially during the game’s intense and cinematic boss fights. This is definitely an action adventure game of the year contender."

MonsterVine (10/10)

"Onimusha: Way of the Sword is easily a contender for game of the year, as it blends merciless action with skill-based combat in a near-seamless way. The story and visuals complement the ridiculously sharp gameplay extremely well, and though the camera can be a little problematic on rare occasions, that shouldn’t stop you from experiencing Capcom’s latest banger."

Nintendo Life (9/10)

"Onimusha: Way of the Sword is a successful revival of Capcom's samurai franchise that pushes its gameplay in an exciting new direction while still retaining its core identity. The slower, more deliberate combat feels great, especially when you manage several deflections in quick succession before slicing your foe in half. Glorious. Not everything works. The English voiceover doesn't quite fit with the overall presentation, while occasional jaunts to and from multiple NPCs threaten to derail the otherwise excellent pacing. These are minor gripes though; Onimusha is back baby, and it's better than ever."

Push Square (9/10)

"Onimusha: Way of the Sword’s cast, quest, numerous asides, and the evolution of techniques and combat throughout this adventure have the weight and depth to make you roar in triumph, groan in agony, and hit most of the feelings in between along the way. And that’s exactly what I want out of my demon-slaying samurai action-adventure."

CGMagazine (8/10)

"Onimusha: Way of the Sword is a great modern entry into the long-running and long-dormant Capcom series. The combat and story are great, but open-world bloat makes this Capcom's most divisive release in years."

GameSpot (8/10)

"It feels odd to be disappointed by a game with so many moments I absolutely adore, but that's what happens when the potential to be greater is so obvious. The uninspired semi-open-world is a misstep that doesn't justify its existence, yet Way of the Sword is still a fantastic and welcome return for the series, led by outstanding combat that firmly places it in the upper echelon of modern action games. Fighting is everything, after all, and there's nothing else quite like Musashi's brand of calculated violence."

VGC (6/10)

"Onimusha: Way of the Sword is worth playing for the combat alone, but the game around it doesn't live up to the standards that it sets from a pure gameplay perspective. Full of filler, overlong and focussed on the wrong things, there is a much better game in Onimusha: Way of the Sword if some of the pieces were arranged differently."

So, there you have folks! Onimusha: Way of the Sword looks to have continued Capcom's trend of producing banger, after banger. I've liked the look of this one for quite some time, but never felt the pull to give it a go. However, after reading these reviews, I reckon I'm likely to pick it up.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword is available September 4 on Xbox Series X|S and PC, with Xbox Play Anywhere support.
