Lara Croft can't seem to catch her breath, as it looks like Tomb Raider: Catalyst has been pushed back to 2028.
The legendary adventurer has has suffered a rocky revival, with the reimagined version of her original adventure, Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, becoming the first of Amazon's Lara Croft projects to receive a delay, moving it from its planned release this year to February 12, 2027.
Now, Amazon's head of gaming, Jeffrey Gattis, has casually mentioned that Lara's next all-new adventure, Tomb Raider: Catalyst, will also face a delay of its own, pushing the release into 2028. Yikes.
The news broke during a conversation about Amazon Luna on The Game Business, where Gattis had this to say:
“We've announced the two Tomb Raider titles, you know, [Legacy of] Atlantis comes February 12th of next year. And then we'll follow on in 2028 with the next one. So we're excited about those. There are some other, you know, AAA things that are in various stages of discussion right now.”
Amazon partnered with Crystal Dynamics back in 2022 to begin development on Tomb Raider: Catalyst. Built using Unreal Engine 5, the game is set to deliver "the largest Tomb Raider world yet" according to the team. Here's what they had to say about Lara's upcoming adventure back in December:
"Powered by Unreal Engine 5, Tomb Raider: Catalyst delivers the largest Tomb Raider world yet where Lara will traverse a landscape full of secrets, delve into lost tombs packed with intricate puzzles, and solve ancient mysteries using her unmatched brilliance and richly customized adventure tech. Perfect for longtime fans and newcomers alike, players will experience an exhilarating story of trust and betrayal that tests Lara Croft in new ways."
It's a shame that both of the new Tomb Raider games have been delayed, but as we always say, if the extra time leads to a better game, we're all for it. Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is scheduled to launch on February 12, 2027, whilst Catalyst will arrive sometime in 2028 on Xbox Series X|S.
