Expedition 33 Dev Says More Games Are Coming In The 'Clair Obscur' Franchise

Is all I've wanted to hear from the dev since the game released. Best game I've played in my 40 years of life. The limits are endless with this franchise.

Honestly, I might not even try whatever they make next. This was so overhyped that it was never going to fulfill expectations (at least for me).
Not a bad game at all, and the soundtrack is almost perfection, but everything else I just thought it was alright. Game fell apart after Act 1 for me and had to force myself to finish it. I don't think it makes my top 20 of JRPGs
In any case, I know it was a complete success and I'm in the minority, so kudos to the team.
I think I'll go back to Shadow Hearts. 🤣

I'm 3 achievements away from 100%ing this game and I will be sad when I do it.

Amazing game. Can't wait to see what comes next, whether that be DLC, sequel, or any new direction. Please keep it turn-based though.

Yeah I agree. Having a direct sequel would be nice, or at least something that focuses on the writers.

@Kaloudz how are they endless? New entries about previous expeditions will grow stale in time, I loved the game but it felt like they only set up the writers vs painters conflict. Which we could obviously explore with flashbacks about Maelle and whatnot but it feels very limited as far as worldbuilding goes.

@Cherip-the-Ripper Outside of the canvas (the canvas being where all the expeditions take place) is the world the painters live in. We know next to nothing about that world, or the writers (that also live in that world). And that's just one element. There could be millions of other painters and millions of other canvases - each housing their own worlds and characters and plots. That doesn't even account for how the writers build their own worlds.

The world of expedition is just one single canvas in a world where painters and writers (and whatever else) can forge stories totally unique and separate from E33.

I gave it a good go, made it probably half way through (I've since watched the full cut scenes and read many a reddit story interpretation). I just can't do turn based combat in some games, especially if it becomes a little repetitive. Maybe I'll go back to it someday, the music, characters and story are fabulous.

@Kaloudz comment #9 spot on dude. There could be a whole inception level of storytelling left to go based on what they've already done. So many different ways they can go with this

@Lup the thing that bums me out is that it's a huge success, and now all jrpg will copy the combat, which I didn't care for to say the least. DQXI had traditional turn based combat and it was an amazing game, but no one seemed to care, and now, because this is how the industry works, everyone is going to copy Clair Obscur.

I liked the game overall, but I had some real issues with a few story choices, and I really hated the way they made one ending obviously the "bad" choice.

Well… a lot of people seem happy with this overhyped title so I guess I’m happy for them…

@Kaloudz I get that, but personally knowing it's all just gonna be yet another canvas takes away from it all.
I found E33 to be very intriguing with a good plottwist. But all that gets taken away for every new entry with swapped assets.
I hope they genre bend or sth, like a steampunk adventure next would be rad.

@Cherip-the-Ripper That's the beauty of it. They could go absolutely anywhere with it. It's a world of endless possibilities that are tethered to the imagination / personality of the painter or writer. I reckon the next game will take place outside of the canvas, or possibly within the realm of however the writers create things.

@Sindayl E33 is as perfect as a game can be. The visuals, the score, the gameplay (for a turn based RPG) the story. It all bonds together so well. FF7 has been my favourite game for nearly 30 years. E33 took its place.

@Coletrain I know right? I would personally love to see a story revolving around the writers - to see how they function. Whatever they do though, they need to leave the expedition canvas alone. That story is done and dusted, and it doesn't get any better than that. I don't think there's any need to go back there - unless they can come up with a way that allows characters to leave the canvas... Either way, whatever they do, I am so there for it.

@Kaloudz I couldn’t disagree more, but we’ve already hashed this out. There’s no right or wrong here. I just can’t stand this western wannabe j-rpg.

@Kaloudz It really is an outstanding game. I agree on leaving this story arc alone. I would rather they work on a sequel/different in-universe story than release a 2-5hs DLC, even if it ends up being great.

Let's not forget there is a movie coming too, which was greenlit months before the actual release of the game, so it's not as if we won't see anymore of this specific cast and story.

@Nighto4 Yeah for sure. The story needs to be left. That's something I hope they have the sense to do. I'd hate it if they made a DLC that goes beyond the ending of the E33 story. I do wonder though, which ending is truly considered canon.

Oh I know! I cannot wait for the movie. I certainly hope they pick Robert Patterson for Gustave. He'd nail that in both looks and character.

@Kaloudz hell yeah man. Who's to say the writers aren't in a canvas of their own without even knowing!

Whatever they decide to do, that team have more creativity in the tips of their little fingers that most Devs could even hope to have!

@Coletrain Could not agree more. I'd take anything from these devs for the simple reason that they're in-tune with community. They know what we want and they're clearly able to deliver. I was blown away by E33 and even more so on my second run (you notice things that you didn't notice to begin with - such as Verso watching the Expedition enter the mansion for the first time, and more).

Most people consider the game a masterpiece while a minority is still wondering how it could be so adored. In the end, it all comes down to personal feelings, I guess.
