The first game in December's Xbox Game Pass lineup is the brand-new release of SteamWorld Build, which officially arrives for console, PC and cloud on Friday, December 1st. Ahead of that date, the reviews have begun rolling in over the past hour, including here at Pure Xbox where we gave the game an "Excellent" 9/10.

Our review praised the city-builder as a "slick and addictive addition to a wonderful steampunk franchise":

But what about everyone else? We've been searching the web for various other SteamWorld Build reviews, and we've dropped some of them down below. Here's a quick at-a-glance look at some other impressions:

Pure Xbox (9/10)

"You've got wonderfully detailed city-building, addictive mining action and intense tower-defense aspects all in the mix here, and it tells you everything you need to know about this one that all of these elements work in harmony."

God Is A Geek (9/10)

"SteamWorld Build is a deeply compelling city management title that adds new mechanics all the time, keeping you hooked throughout."

Nintendo Life (8/10)

"You’re all but guaranteed to adore your first time through, but subsequent playthroughs may not carry the same magic. Still, with all that being said, this is undeniably a triumph of mechanical marvellousness."

Push Square (8/10)

"SteamWorld Build is a delightful and very satisfying foray into the city-building genre. The two gameplay modes complement each other well, offering two very different but equally pleasing ways to gain resources."

GamesRadar (4/5)

"SteamWorld Build is proof that the SteamWorld formula can be applied to almost any genre with its mix of city building and dungeon mining combining for quite the treat."

Game Informer (7/10)

"Regrettably, SteamWorld Build's campaign overstays its welcome. The lackluster story and rigid final objectives turn what was initially an engaging experience into a tedious grind."

GameReactor (7/10)

"I can recommend it to those who are new to the genre or looking for something a little different, but you won't stay long if you're looking for complexity and challenge."

PCGamesN (6/10)

"Steamworld Build delivers an entertaining blend of city building and dungeon crawling, but the two pillars don’t completely gel and myriad annoyances taint the experience."

As you can see, there are a few mixed opinions towards the bottom of the list here, but in general it looks like SteamWorld Build will score pretty well on the likes of Metacritic and OpenCritic - probably somewhere around the 75-80 mark (or above!).

We're obviously big fans of the game here at Pure Xbox, and the best bit is that Xbox Game Pass members don't need to spend anything extra to try it out - it'll be with us in just a few short days as a great way to kick off December!
