The Dev Behind This PS5 Exclusive Is Now Working On Sea Of Thieves

An unexpected voyage

Of all the teams you might expect to be working on Sea Of Thieves, Lucid Games probably isn't one of them! The Destruction AllStars developer announced earlier today that it had partnered with Rare on the "legendary voyage".

Destruction AllStars, as you may recall, was a PlayStation 5 exclusive back in 2021, and looking back at the history of the studio, Lucid Games doesn't have much experience with Xbox development in general. The company helped out with Goat Simulator in 2015, and was also lead developer on Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions in 2014.

Here's what the team had to say about the announcement earlier today:

"We’re excited to announce that we are working with Rare on Sea of Thieves!

It’s been incredible supporting them on their thrilling pirate adventure & we can’t wait to see where this legendary voyage will take us!"

It seems like a busy time for Rare in general at the moment, with Sea Of Thieves going from strength to strength, the Everwild team gearing up for a big 2023, and GoldenEye 007 set to be added to Xbox Game Pass very soon.

In my opinion... this is not good news for Sea of Thieves fans. Basically it feels like Rare is handing the game off to a lessor developer so they can focus on a game that hasn't exactly generated a ton of interest.

Destruction AllStars was a big flop so reckon Sony cut all ties with them. As at one point I thought that Sony was going to buy them.

Maybe if this partnership works out M$ might aquire them instead. Hopefully means Everwild won't still be many years away.

@taternuggets There were aspects of Destruction AllStars that were competent, but the business model and a few fundamentals weren't quite there. I suspect Lucid are just assisting, which is pretty common in game dev. Just look at the credits of most AAA games for the number of Asian support studios. Likely business as usual

I love Sea of Thieves with friends only and I really want Banjo-Kazooie next, not Everwild, whatever Everwild is. Conker, Jet Force Gemini, Viva Piñata... They all are great IPs that are abandoned.

It wasn't ***** and gameplay was good but not for all, also exclusive multiplayer on ps5 only its like knowing the game gonna fall.

The characters art, driving all of those where great but Sony first tried to make it 70usd and ask for payment for the pve missions, also not racing with this gameplay was a shame.

Sony killed this game before it even got released.

Bleeding Edge was better but also died fast.
I enjoyed both of them.
