It's that time of the year where we're starting to see Game of the Year nominations pop up all over the place. Xbox Game Studios has had a good run so far - receiving all sorts of nominations from different ceremonies.
What about the head of Xbox, Phil Spencer, though? What's his top game of the year? In an appearance on Major Nelson's 20th-anniversary video special, Phil admitted it was "probably" Psychonauts 2 by Double Fine.
"Frankly for me [Psychonauts 2] is probably my game of the year - just [a] fantastic game... in my view, as a fan of Double Fine, [it's] the best game that they've ever shipped."
Phil's actually got quite a history with the original game, which sort of explains why he's such a big fan of the sequel.
"Before Psychonauts 2 came out I actually went through back compat and played through the original Psychonauts again really just reliving those moments - I was so impressed with how that stood up."
It's great to see a game like Psychonauts 2 receive so much praise from the head of Xbox, when often these types of titles can get lost amongst a lot of action-blockbusters around this time of the year.
Most recently, the same title was also awarded the 'Xbox Game of the Year' at the 2021 Golden Joystick Awards. We also praised it ourselves, awarding it ten out of ten stars and praising it at the time as a GOTY contender.

It's a fantastic game and one of the most creative experiences I've ever had in a 3D platformer. You absolutely need to play this game if you haven't yet!
No matter how great Psychonauts 2 is, there are still many countries where you can't play it because of the lack of language support.
Too many interruptions and cutscenes……. U cant just get on & play the damn game….. i found it draining

I really enjoyed Psychonauts 2 but my favorite Double Fine game is still Grim Fandango.

I can't choose between it, Returnal or Metroid Dread easily but if forced I'd probably give to Psychonaughts 2, yea.
I never played the original, so I didn't know what to expect going in and had only just finished R&C: Rift Apart on PS5 a few months prior, so the bar was already high.
I was blown away.
Probably the best platformer I've played since Mario Odyssey. The only thing that let it down was the combat was a bit weak compared to Rift Apart. Other than that, I couldn't fault it.
I hope they are able to make a sequel, as there's still plenty more story to be told with Raz.
I'd agree, I often play a few games at a time and rotate them each gaming session but with Psychonauts 2, it just hooked me and I didn't play anything else until i got 100%
Would love them to bring a Psychonauts 3 out in a few years time

I played a chunk of it, liked it, but fun found combat to be really unrewarding. I’ll go back to it someday, but I’m not in a rush.
