The folks over at Windows Central have today shared a bunch of details about the highly-anticipated new Xbox exclusive RPG from Obsidian called Avowed, which we haven't heard much about since its reveal in July of 2020.

They've received various details about the current state of the game, including that it's reportedly deep into pre-production with the studio "close to having a working early version", so we could see it in a playable state by E3 2022 at the latest, and potentially even at The Game Awards ("a small chance") later this December.

In terms of what to expect, it's said to be based on a "similar, albeit enhanced engine" from The Outer Worlds, featuring "action-oriented first-person combat and deep RPG exploration and narrative systems." It's also mentioned that it'll borrow from Skyrim's two-handed combat system while also featuring multiple class playstyles.

"You could wield two daggers and be a stealthy rogue, or dive into archery with a two-handed bow. You could use a combination of swords and magic, or go full two-handed magic, which is required to wield some of the game's more potent spells and abilities."

In addition, the game is expected to feature many elements that will be familiar to Pillars of Eternity fans, with the likes of wizard spells, weapon enchantments and Pillars-style guns all potentially being featured, and while Avowed is primarily described as "undoubtedly Obsidian's take on The Elder Scrolls", it's expected to be much more colourful than those titles, even despite its initial trailer suggesting it could be quite a dark and dreary game.

Windows Central has apparently seen early footage of Avowed, and has lavished praise upon it, saying it "looks like it plays extremely well, with refined action RPG combat set in a vibrant, medieval fantasy world I cannot wait to explore." Here at Pure Xbox, we were already pretty excited for this one, but now those hype levels are sky high!

"Avowed went from relative obscurity in my list of most anticipated Xbox games to sitting near the top, especially as a big fan of The Outer Worlds. Obsidian's excellent character writing and penchant for branching narratives, combined with the rich World of Eternity gives Avowed some seriously huge potential, and I can't wait to see the game fully revealed."
