If you're like us, you may have a fondness for the gaming days of a bygone era. There's a certain warm, fuzzy feeling when popping in an old Nintendo 64 cartridge that discs just can't seem to replicate. And with that said, this fan mock-up of what Xbox Series X game cartridges could look like has got us wishing it was real.
Shared by Instagram user TheLovelySnack, these designs provide a retro throwback with a modern twist. Following a similar design to the Xbox Series X's external SSD card, they are seen slipping into the same slot at the back of the console. While it's perhaps not very practical, we can't deny how cool they would be.
We'd even be happy to have these as display pieces to please our inner collectors. We'll never see anything like this, but it's still a cool concept that we imagine in an alternate reality, Microsoft is reaping the benefits of.
What do you think of this Xbox game cartridge concept? Drop us a comment and let us know.

Imagine when the prices drop so much we can use them as old school game cartridges.
@Senua "If" prices drop! HAHAHA
This is actually me! Appreciate the article
It would allow Series S users to play physical media and yea would make a great collector’s piece. Unfortunately very cost inefficient, however
But as games get bigger and bigger and go over 100gb, one of these for a game might actually make sense. For Blake Stone; perhaps not so much.
That would be amazing..
@K1LLEGAL looool, I was gonna say I thought this was you as I replied to your thread the other day!
@K1LLEGAL You were here all along! 😅
I mean, these will never be cheaper than a bluray disc, but even still it would be kinda cool to buy compilations, like the Gears of War Collection or Halo Infinite. Imagine having Halo Infinite on a memory card like that, with enough available space to keep it updated. That'd be pretty f'ing cool.
Said it before, say it again: that expansion slot should had been in the front!!!!
@ralphdibny @flurbdurb Yup haha it’s a small world
At Neo Geo prices
Now if xbox made an handheld I'd like the games to look like this for it
You could prolly do this now with the size that COD games are.
@K1LLEGAL nice work, and nice account. Followed!
@themightyant Aw thanks very much
Optical Drives are crap.Always been and always be.
they are slow, they are noisy, and they wear-out so fast.
carts FTW and most will outlast us. I wish the next Xbox use carts instead of these stupid drives.
@misterfpga Yea I am a massive fan of cartridges for some reason; mainly Nostalgia to be fair. But Switch carts I purchase Physical; and I would be the same with Xbox and PS if they were cartridges. For some reason I don’t like discs so i’m fully digital.
Of course all of this goes against what Xbox is doing with Gamepass (which I love) but still.
@K1LLEGAL
gamepass is great and I love it. But when it come to purchasing a physical copy, carts is what I prefer.
ofc, in the ages of DLCs, day one patches, we can agree that physical games (being CD or carts) are sometimes a hassle in comparison of all digital. Is especially true for switch cart where you have to download the game data in order to play with your cart. But when it come to preserving physical copies, optical drives for consoles should just die already.
It would be fantastic if someone made a blank cartridge that could hold an SD Card and allow you to back-up games to it.
Possibly the closest thing to a cartridge we'll likely get.
