After a report surfaced earlier today about an upcoming project known as Assassin's Creed Infinity, Ubisoft has now come forward to confirm its existence and reveal some more details about it.
In a lengthy blog post, it was confirmed to be a cross-studio collaboration, merging both Ubisoft Quebec and Ubisoft Montreal. Numerous members of the team have been shifted around with a new structure in place, taking developers who have worked on projects such as previous Assassin's Creed titles, Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, Far Cry 2, and Watch Dogs: Legion.
As for the project itself, Ubisoft didn't elaborate too heavily on it. What was mentioned is that the project will be "evolving along with the video game industry". Following the pandemic, Ubisoft is said to have "fundamentally changed the way we produce games" and they "believe this is an opportunity for one of Ubisoft’s most beloved franchises to evolve in a more integrated and collaborative manner."
The previous report suggested the project will be following along the lines of popular live service models such as Fortnite and GTA: Online by building a constantly evolving world. Apparently, this "may be some sort of hub that allows people to play multiple Assassin's Creed games both big and small."
It's good to get some confirmation following today's news, we just wish Ubisoft would have elaborated slightly on what the plans were. That said, with the project being early in development, we understand elements change fairly consistently, so we don't expect to hear more until some concrete details are finalised.

While AC multiplayer actually is quite fun, Idk if I would want this. Good for anyone who's interested, though.
Edit: sounds like this is a ways off. We will probably get at least one more standard AC game in the meantime.

This is horrible, Absolutely horrible, The death of Assassin's Creed has begun.. These companies are so out of touch..
So still no splinter cell. What a waste.
Yeah, it was fun (mostly) while it lasted but this sort of thing is an instant turn-off. I don't need more Fortnite, I need less. A lot less.
RIP Assassin's Creed. This is the most horrendous idea I've heard in gaming in a long time. Why would you take an ultra popular narrative adventure and turn it into an online sandbox service? It doesn't even make sense. Just chasing the money....which has ended so well for so many games.....
This is what happens when we prioritize photorealism - it comes at the cost of gameplay, structure, design, or really everything else. It's just a Virtual Life simulator to replace forums, but with avatars you move. A big empty sandbox with nothing worthwhile to actually do. How lovely.

I really don't get how these guys come up with this stuff. It's not like AC wasn't profitable. It's not like they ran out of civilizations and eras to play in. Somewhere a bunch of bankers got together and decided the market trend shows online services where you "hang out with friends" generate the most player engagement rate and post-sale content and someone decided to build the game around that revenue engine - the content exists to service the business model rather than the other way around. I don't know where these guys come up with this stuff.

But yeah, I really have always loved Ubis creativity and designs... They made great worlds to explore, and Yves was one of the last gamer/dev executives left. But more and more everything they do feels like uninspired, checkbox filling, business strategies. Fenyx was my personal favorite game of the year, but it was an unusually passion filled project compared to what they're doing with most other games.
Maybe it's Fallout 76 syndrome. Todd said they did that because single player wasn't profitable anymore with the size and scale they need. Maybe Ubi would have been better going all in on Uplay+game pass, or getting bought (yuck).
This AC idea is a disaster. Take your top shelf IP and try to recreate Fortnite. Do they not remember For Honor?
I hope that this is a spin-off like Umbrella Corps was. I can't imagine Assassin's Creed as an online service. If they have new business ideas they don't need to destroy AC. They can do... Watch Dogs? That would make more sense.
Live service - yeah, thanks but no thanks. What I actually enjoy about the latest entries is being sucked into the world and the storylines.
Way to alienate your fanbase by giving them the complete opposite of what they are used to. Why everyone has to try and copy these terrible trends. Hope they all keep failing like Avengers, really every developer needs to stop trying this. Sure they are some successful ones, but not every franchise is cut for this model!
Honestly not keen on all these games that want to be the only game we play. Odyssey and Valhalla were already overly long. Less is more.
And how is this going to work with a well paced narrative, “come back next month for the next part of the story?” for me this is headed in the wrong direction.
