Prepare for boarding, because Microsoft Flight Simulator for Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S will be available with Xbox Game Pass in just 24 hours' time! Without a doubt, it's going to be a very popular release.
Ahead of the Tuesday, July 27 launch, a select few outlets have been given access to an early copy of the game, and the first reviews have now started to drop. So, without further ado, here's what they're saying:
Press Start Australia (10/10)
"Microsoft Flight Simulator is a game that you have to play to understand just how incredible of an experience it is. It's an incomparable adventure that consistently surprises and delights."
MondoXbox (9.5/10)
"The extremely high level of simulation, the excellent technical component and the possibility of faithfully exploring practically every point on Earth make this new chapter a must-have for all flight enthusiasts, but thanks to the many aids it can also be appreciated by those who have never tried a similar title. Unmissable."
Windows Central (9/10)
"Microsoft Flight Simulator expands to Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S as a truly next-generation experience, presenting a technical showcase to flex these new systems. The title sports commendable optimizations on console and maintains solid performance, especially as a title reputable for pushing the best PC hardware out there."
TheGamer (8/10)
"Microsoft Flight Simulator deserves to be played - but it shouldn't be considered essential. It's a unique experience, one that won't capture everyone in the same way, but you really do owe it to yourself to find your house, your partner's, your parent's, your favourite holiday destination, and just fly over."
Ars Technica (No Score)
"MSFS's beauty makes it must-play on Xbox Series X, even if only for a one-month free Xbox Game Pass trial. But while its console port is a technological triumph, it might still be too boring for a lot of players. Series S players should temper expectations with a bit less beauty."
Eurogamer (No Score)
"This is Microsoft Flight Simulator on console in all its glory and occasional clunkiness, and with that sense of splendour and wonder unsullied by the small imperfections along the way. It remains one of the most breathtaking videogame achievements in recent years, and on console one of the most incredible next-gen experiences to date."
We're still very early in terms of reviews right now, with only a few having been submitted at the time of writing, but it looks like Microsoft Flight Simulator for Xbox will settle somewhere around the 90 mark on Metacritic. If that turns out to be the case, it could well become the top-rated Xbox Series X and Series S game on the site.
You'll be able to check it out tomorrow, and we've published a full list of release times elsewhere on Pure Xbox.
Will you be playing Microsoft Flight Simulator this week? Let us know down in the comments below.

It's 1 day A WAY! This is the first game I've watched streams for before the game came out to get some of the settings and configurations down. Game seems perfect for what I'm looking for. Sometimes I have to work from home and want to put something on the tv. This will be it. Sometimes I like to practice playing guitar/bass/drums and want something on the tv to play along too. This will be it.
I foresee putting hundreds if not thousands of hours into this game over the next decade. See you all in the sky!
Finally the wait is nearly over. Can't wait to take to the skies tomorrow
And here’s me downloading it just to see what it’s like in 4K 30 HDR, then realise how horrible it’ll be to control with a controller, and then go back to my PC where I can run it 45fps solid and use my Thrustmaster side stick and throttle.
Oh, and development version of the A32NX. 💪
What's the point in deducting points because it's a simulator and might bore some players? As a simulator it deserves 10/10.
@Mr_Ditkovitch Haven't seen any opinions that it's horrible to control from the dozens of reviews I've read.
I'd be interested to hear your feedback after playing it.
Remember, you can use certain flight sticks on the consoles.
Excellent to hear! I’m excited to fire it up tomorrow.
FYI Although Eurogamer don’t give scores as such, they actually awarded it their “Essential” rating, which is the highest accolade they can give.
Sounds wonderful, look forward to eventually playing it sometime!
@BlueOcean Because they probably aren’t fans of the series, and only praise games like CoD or mobile games.
@Mr_Ditkovitch It's 30 FPS and if your tv has VRR it can go up to 60FPS
@Halucigens Good to see I am not the only one watching videos to get Hotas/Controller settings!!
@Mr_Ditkovitch Yep, it's ridiculous to complain about the genre in a review.
I’m off work this week so i’ll be in the sky come midnight!! My house, my parents house, my place of work, the grand canyon, mount rushmore, disney world in florida, mount everest, Pablo Escobar’s house and his island he used to re fuel planes, buckingham palace, etc!!! So much to see!!! Can’t wait!!! 😆😆😆
@BlueOcean @Mr_Ditkovitch I'd argue for two scores. An overall to let someone who doesn't play the genre if it's worth it and a score for in the genre. A great fighting game for someone heavily invested into them may not be as good as a casual fighting fan.
Though this approach is harder to distill to metacritic and to the average consumer.
@Bdbrady But this is different, there isn't any kind of game within, it's either flying on your own or assisted. It's a pure flight simulator. It's like reviewing a football management game saying I think that those not interested in managing a football team will get bored and then deduct two points because of it.
Fantastic scores, but it’s a definite pass for me. As phenomenal as it looks, imo it’s just a tech demo. But hoping people who are excited for it, enjoy it.
@Talkshowhost Small planes are ok with the controller, but airliners aren’t. Currently rudder control is broken (rudder doesn’t re-centre) on PC, hopefully they fix that with the console release/sim update 5. The flight sticks currently available on console are pretty rubbish too, they should allow more peripherals to be used really.
_ Can this game run in consoles?
_ Surely you can't be serious!
_ I am serious. And don't call me Shirley!
I'm absolutely terrible at flying in most games. In fact, worse than that! However, I'm looking forward to giving this a go. Really want to visit some of the places I have been during my life (I'm nearing 60, so I've been about a bit!).
In no particular order:
The Falkland Islands (Hoping I won't get shot at this time!!!)
South Georgia (I once landed there by plane on the beach as there is no airport there!).
Paradise Island in the Maldives, which you get to in a seaplane after landing in Male, which has a relatively short runway that ends abruptly and were you to overshoot you would end up in the sea!)
Sun Island in the Maldives
Diane Beach, Kenya (I'm not sure how realistic the landing mechanics are in the game, but landing in Mombassa is one of the most worrying places I ever landed in an aircraft (and I did it 7 times!) because approaching aircraft have to bank steeply and lose a lot of altitude really quickly to land there - if it is realistic, you fly low over the slums on approach too, which is quite a sight)
And various other places in Europe, including Hamelin in Germany, parts of Turkey and Egypt.
And of course looking forward to dive bombing my current abode...
@Cyrus29 I’m with you. It seems like such a bizarre game to me.
@SplooshDmg you're showing your age
Guess the New Zealand trick doesn't work with this one....was eager to start flying today!
@SplooshDmg Oh found out - meant to take off a bit earlier from New Zealand as I wanted to take a small break from work. Guess it will have to be tomorrow!
@Fiendish-Beaver
Thanks for sharing! It was an interesting read I probably won't play it because I suck at flying in Battlefield, but I just might give this a go by the end of the year just to see what the fuss is about.
It's not my style of game, glad so many can enjoy it. Go Xbox!
@FatalBubbles seems like it’s more of an experience then a game. For me If I did try it, I can see myself being bored with it after a few minutes. But it’s something I would def try if I could try in vr, which would be an incredible experience.
@Mr_Ditkovitch
Or maybe you are not the center of the universe, and not everyone has to enjoy something the same way you do? Just a thought ...
@lokozar Where exactly did I at any point, claim that I am the centre of the universe?
@Mr_Ditkovitch
You're trying to evade. Of course you didn't claim it. That would be nonsensical from a rhetorical point of view.
However, here is an exact quote of you:
"Because they probably aren’t fans of the series, and only praise games like CoD or mobile games."
In case you didn't notice: This sentence implies, that the opinion of people, who do not enjoy the game the way you do, is invalid. Which in turn means, you're raising your view on this topic to the only valid one. Everyone else is just not a fan and makes the mistake to compare the game to different genres. It's condescending. Hence, my analogy regarding the center of the universe.
I'm sorry you chose these words.
@lokozar Lmao, alright mate. You think what you want to think.
@Mr_Ditkovitch
I was pretty sure you would answer like this. It's common among people with a lack of self-awareness. You know, whether you accept it or not, words do have meaning.
@lokozar Mate, you’re the one with the problem here. I never said anything bad. Go troll someone else. 👍
