Double Fine's Psychonauts 2 has been getting a bunch of attention today following the release of various hands-on previews, and thanks to one of them, we appear to know the game's performance details for every single platform.
Aside from PC, both the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S have the obvious advantage, running at 3840 x 2160 and 2880 x 1620 respectively, both at 60fps. Alternatively, the Series X can run the game at 1440p / 120fps, and the Series S can run it at 1080 / 120fps, with both systems also containing HDR and VRR support.
As you can see from the graph above, the PlayStation 5 version runs the PS4 version via backwards compatibility, and so it's limited to just a 2560 x 1440 resolution, albeit at an improved frame rate of 60fps rather than 30fps. This actually means the Xbox Series S version is a significant improvement over PS5, which we've never really seen until now.
You're going to have fun regardless of which platform you buy Psychonauts 2 on, of course, but with the additional benefit of Xbox Game Pass on day one, it seems a no-brainer to play it on Xbox this August if you can.
What do you make of these performance details for Psychonauts 2? Let us know down in the comments.

Well it's made an xbox developer.....
I remember when Sony paid Capcom to reign in Resident evil 7 quality on the Series X.
Just saying
Well yeah, it’s an Xbox owned game. Can’t wait, looks like easy GOTY material for me.
Not a huge surprise seeing as they own Double Fine now. Never played the first but will give this one a go when it comes out.
@uptownsoul No physical release? Really?
"Next-gen version of a game will run better than the previous-gen version" ~ Wow, really?
Oh man...AND it's on gamepass?!
rushes over to pushsquare to see how many people are not gonna buy this, now
@uptownsoul @Razputinman I don’t know about a site, but Phil straight up said they weren’t doing a physical on the Kinda Funny Cast Interview.
@uptownsoul Different genre, different artistic style and vision. It is supposed to give the player a trippy experience. Also this is an initially crowd-funded multiplatform title and not a AAA next-gen exclusive. As this is creation/brain child of the Tim Schafer I’m expecting a far better story, direction and narrative gameplay than whatever R&C (with it’s same boring formula for story) can ever do.
@The_New_Butler Exactly this.
To point it out-
Ib order to activate 120fps mode for any PS5 game, it has to be a native version. I’m sure that the contract MS took over, a native PS5 version was never part of the deal.
@uptownsoul whilst I agree that's its no ratchet and clank you have to rememeber the budget and production costs for each of those games as I can bet you right now ratchet and clank has atleast three times the production value
@Doctorwhoooourgh "I remember when Sony paid Capcom to reign in Resident evil 6 quality on the Series X."
Any reputable source for that? I've seen reddit posts and YouTube clickbait... so it must be true?
At least it's 60fps on PS5 and not stuck at 30fps like in PS4 Pro
I'll be playing this on Series X but that is a shame for my PS only brethren... and it seems a little petty!
I also agree with those saying this’ll be a step above Ratchet. Psychonauts 1 already has more world building, humor and creativity than ANY Ratchet game and it really sounds like the gameplay has been shored up for 2.
@uptownsoul Potential Jeff Keighley award? You can take that back. The best games do not always need to be stamped/certified by the awards. We know it’s Tim Schafer who is the mastermind behind this IP and with his great sense of art style it’s not merely about some graphics even though it looks great. It’s not wise to hate on a game that is not even out yet.

@uptownsoul “I agree on production value...which makes the $60 preorder price for Psychonauts 2 all the more baffling”
You want to start with those 70$ “Director’s cut” that you guys get scammed for? 😂 🦄
Also do you have any friggin idea of how much acting and narration has been done for Psychonauts 2? Stop hating for just the sake of it and go back to playing your Director’s cut.
@The_New_Butler FIXED
@themightyant my friends dad's uncle works for Sony.
Looks like Psychonauts 2 is not being officially released on 'PS5' but obviously works via their Backwards Compatibility - where as the Series S/X looks to have 'official' support (thanks to Direct Storage and MS owning Double Fine too no doubt).
Psychonauts 2 'could' be a 'next gen' exclusive on Console - When MS bought Double Fine, the game was confirmed for PS4, XB1, PC which is being 'honoured' but as the PS5 was still years from being revealed, no agreement was in place to release a 'PS5' version. Therefore, MS can keep it as a 'next-gen' exclusive (even though PS owners can play it via BC with a better frame rate). Its a bit like Sony paying to keep Injustice as a 'next gen' exclusive for PS4 despite the game releasing on Xbox 360 and playable via BC on XB1...
@The_New_Butler I didn't realise it was going to be PS4 only, just seems a pity for others.
But not that big a deal either, 1440p is a lovely sweet spot resolution for 4K at most people's distance from the TV, i'm sure it will look and play lovely.
@uptownsoul What about it makes you think it doesn’t warrant a $60 price tag? If it’s anything like the original it’ll probably be a healthy length with a lot of side content and optional dialogue and worldbuilding that you’ll still be finding 4-5 playthroughs in.
@uptownsoul They’re also 2D games that have no VO, a much less densely packed world with multiple fully voiced NPCs and shorter than even the first Psychonauts was.
I’d ask you what makes a by the numbers Ratchet game worth $70 as well?
@Sakisa “Obviously PS fanboys cry every time with their huge entitlement complex, lol. By their logic, repack a game and unlock hardware features for 70$. Also R&C wasn’t even 60$ lol.”
“The game cost $0 on the proper platform. They are welcome over!”
@Sakisa to me a games price should reflect is production cost, no ones going to spend 200 million to make a game and sell it for £20, where as if a developer spends 20-30 million on a game then the price is usually way lower.
I don't know how much production cost psychonauts had but judging by its visuals and predecessor I'd say its a mid budget game borderline indie, so I'd expect it to be lower in price. If this was a AAA game it would also come with a physical edition.
But I suppose to big fans of the first psychonauts the price means nothing. If I didn't have gamepass there's no way I'd pay £60 for this, and in fairness I wouldn't pay £70 for ratchet either as i'd never pay over £30 for a game that takes less than 10 hours (personal choice)
I’ll be playing this on Gamepass. I must admit I never played the first game and probably wouldn’t be interested in this if it wasn’t included with Gamepass. Previews are good so it might surprise me.
Sucks for PS5 only players that they won’t get an upgrade, I’m sure they’ll be happy playing their exclusives or this on a high end PC though.
@The_New_Butler “ You aren't wrong but boy if you go into a Ratchet and Clank game for the story are you in the wrong ball park!”
Definitely an eye candy game. It’s the 17th game in the series (and people say Gears is stale?). Stories usually don’t hold up for that many iterations. I really enjoyed R&C (2016), though, so I’ll pick up Rift Apart when it hits $40. No hurry, for me.
@UltimateOtaku91 Psychonauts 2 was initially crowd funded and made over 4 mill on it. Physical versions are reserved for backers in that regard, and the initial publisher was Starbreeze. The game had a version ready to ship that was definitely a stripped down ‘indie’ version of the original before Microsoft picked them up. Don’t know what cash injection they got from that but I do know all the cut content, including levels and all bosses got added back in while Double Fine also got access to clinical Psychologists for consulting on writing and some re-writes. The game isn’t a big AAA blowout but I wouldn’t call it indie at this point either. I’ve never minded paying full price for some AA games and yeah, I have a bias for Psychonauts, so I guess that’s part of it, but questioning $60 for what looks to be a unique follow up to a unique title makes more sense to me than the guy saying it doesn’t seem worth it compared to yet another standard Ratchet game, but prettier for a full $70.
@uptownsoul buddy NEO The World Ends With You, No More Heroes 3, and Tales of Arise aren’t AAA either but are sold for full price. $60 isn’t always AAA games, and in fact I think many times AAA games are the ones least worth that price tag.
Man these comments is lit.
@SplooshDmg so a low blow on JRPG's is that your stance with games like persona and dragon quest too? Those games provide 80-100 hours worth of content and then the cost to pay other studios to dub and translate
@uptownsoul you could just wait for a sale on psychonauts 2
@uptownsoul keep in mind that while initially crowdfunded, it got a large budget boost under MS, making it a far better and more complete game than it would’ve been otherwise. Fair enough if you and I have a different stance on pricing though. I certainly don’t think AAA ‘cinematic experiences’ that clock 6-10 hours are worth 60-70 dollars but some people do.
Surprised that the comment section is more heated up here than on PushSquare. Game looks great, maybe gonna pick it up on PC, never played Psychonauts before, do I need to play the prequel to understand this game?
@SirCroconut It’ll apparently have a recap video, but I do definitely recommend giving the original a shot if you get the chance. Psychonauts stands unrivaled when it comes to setting, premise and story among 3D platformers.
@Sakisa Allright, thank you, gonna consider to buy the prequel after my PC back from being small mining rig, is it available on Steam?
@uptownsoul Yeah, Ryse, Detroit and Quantum Break were not games I cared for nor do I think they’re worth 60 bucks. New God of War was though. Maybe I’m coming across as harsh, but we probably just disagree on what should be worth what price and why, so sorry if I was a bit intense in my previous comments.
I’m also not disparaging JRPGs at all, but I will say I think even ones made on a smaller budget are worth full MSRP price, same way I feel about Psychonauts 2.
@Sakisa you know what I'm going to change my stance, one of the games I've recently completed was atelier ryza 2 and to me it's one of the best games I've played yet it had a way smaller budget as ratchet and clank yet I paid £60 for it, i think a games worth is up to the person who bought and played it. A price point is what a developer thinks they're game is worth and up to the players if they agree with that worth or not, hence the different opinions on this games price.
Once I've played psychonauts 2 I'd say if it's worth £60 or not (to me) but until then il hold off further judgment.
@The_New_Butler Thanks for the take. Does $40 sound about right, or should I wait even longer?
@uptownsoul @Sakisa Detroit was legit the game on PS4 from Year of Dreams I was the most excited for. I preordered it that night. Got to admit, I never got far past "press square to wash dishes". It was definitely not the game I thought it was going to be. Not by a long shot. The trailer set in the E3 event was all about the cool police detective angle with a subtext about basic rights and division. A modern take on I, Robot. The reality of the game was a depressing ham-fisted narrative on slavery and discrimination. Emphasis on ham-fisted. Probably my biggest disappointment of last gen, from ultra-hype to "I can't even bother past chapter 2" in a $60 flush.
@UltimateOtaku91 @uptownsoul I think you two are missing @SplooshDmg 's sarcasm and point-making with the Trails of Cold Steel "bashing"
Overall I tend to prefer AA games (by far) to most AAA and feel it's worth full price moreso. Including those JRPGs. BUT, I do feel $60 is too big an ask for Psychonauts 2 (and R&C: RiT if I'm honest). BUT.....the price isn't $60. It's $10 to play on Game Pass since it's such a short game, a month isn't too short a time to play it. It's only $60 if you don't have an Xbox, PC, or internet capable of streaming it.
@The_New_Butler @PhhhCough What I want to see is how many Push Square posters would praise the $15 upgrade fee to the PS5 version to "support developers in creating more great content". I'm sure that ideal applies to Double Fine as much as to Housemarque and Sucker Punch, right?
@SplooshDmg Minor correction: $10 for PC or Xbox. $15 (for now) for streaming. But otherwise, it's a better price proposition to play this game than $60 for anyone not a diehard. Which.....is kind of the whole point of buying studios for Game Pass and the entire XB ecosystem....soo...yeah. We can also play Sony's $70 baseball game for $10/15.... it certainly sells the value angle
I have to stand up for Falcom and Legend of Heroes/Trails of Cold Steel though. Arguably one of the very best RPG series in the entire genre. They aren't lookers, but that's the most complete, deep story telling in the world of video games, coupled to rock-solid JRPG mechanics. The entire series (not just TCS 1-4, but the whole LoH franchises is one complete story, entirely connected. I can think of no other game with that kind of story depth (and certainly not the 10 hour moviegames.) it falls into some anime tropes, for sure, but overall, it's a fantastically deep story. More than the weirdness of FF for sure.
The unfortunate side of it is the series is spread all over multiple platforms with no uniform place to play all entries. TCS4 acts as a culmination of not just the TCS subseries but the entire LoH franchise, including a lot of characters, references and story from games from long, long ago. So few playing it have played the whole thing. Some of it's trapped on the MSX computer, some of it's on SNES, some of it's on PSP, some on Vita, some on PS3/4, + Switch & PC. None on XB though. They brought newer entries to Switch, but it doesn't have the first 2 parts of the 4 part subseries and it never will because XSeed owns the publishing rights and there was some falling out between parties.)
If they could somehow, someday put out some compendium that has everything from the 1992 SNES title through present on the same platform at the same time, it would be amazing. The series is as old as Elder Scrolls but more narrative dependent.
@SplooshDmg yeah every dragon quest has been solid especially 11, one of the best games of last gen full stop. Have you ever gave the persona games a try?
@SplooshDmg actually you mentioning pixar reminded me of a game coming soon, Kena Bridge of spirits is pretty much a beautiful pixar style game with graphics I belive to be better than ratchet and clank yet half the price
@SplooshDmg Yeah, I got the point you were making earlier on...but had to stick up for it for good measure in the comments
@UltimateOtaku91 Kena and Stray are legitimately the only two PS5 games on radar I'm at all hyped about, in addition to GoW2. And both are budget indies
@NEStalgia I haven't seen too much of stray but at first glance kena does not look like a budget title at all, especially after watching the last trailer.
@LightningLeader well they did partner with limited run recently. It’s possible they are going to leave it in their hands like they did with iam8bit with Ori.
@Doctorwhoooourgh @themightyant Resident Evil 6? Why would Sony care how that game runs on Series X? Assuming you mean Village, that isn't what the agreement was about
Do people know how long or deep the game is? Why is the price an issue with this game and not with Sony and Nintendo's remasters for 60 or 70?
The lack of physical is the only thing that surprised me. Not that I buy physical games anymore but it's somewhat shocking although it could be related to the crowdfunding origins.
I don't think the graphics is what should dictate the price of a game. Ratchet & Clank Drift Apart is more a linear shooter than anything else, animation and graphics alone don't lift it above anything else, the teleport is a gimmick and the worlds are small. The PS4 game was a medium-price release and it's also gorgeous. Of course, indie 2D or basic 3D games shouldn't cost as much as AAA games but when I think of that, I'm thinking of Haven (3D) or Celeste (2D). There are beautiful 2D games like Ori that require more development resources and of course a 3D game entails many more development issues and factors to cover unless it's extremely simplistic and has a free camera.
The RPG genre is an interesting matter. The good ones deserve to be full-priced even if they are not animated as Pixar films because of the many elements involved in development. I'd say it's actually easier to make a short linear game with shallow gameplay that looks great. They are eye candy but most of the times you don't feel like going back to them, as most films that you have watched.
@Doctorwhoooourgh You mean Village and that wasn't the case, the Xbox version couldn't have extras over the PlayStation like an extra map for mercs. Also come out after deals like this done all the time between them all, and we know it was a thing back in the day for 360.
I don't get the bashing of the Ghost Directors Cut as you can just buy the DLC and the DLC is being rumored to be about 15hrs long (I very much doubt it) and if you've not played before you can buy it all together in one package.
I don't know how this any different to likes of Witcher 3 GOTY Edition, Gears 5 GOTY Edition or Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition all got re-released at RRP with all the content.
To me this what this is, like I bought HZD at launch then bought the DLC when that come out and others would have bought the expansions for Witcher 3 where could have waited for a complete bundle.
The comments here are a blast.
As someone who's just finishing off Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, this game looks brilliant and all the previews are signing it's praises.
I can't wait to give this a shot on Game Pass and love to see MS have provided the funding for a native next-gen version.
Roll on August 25th!
@masofdas
It's the upgrade path people aren't happy with.
Should have been;
Instead, you have to pay $30 if you want to upgrade to the native PS5 version, even if you might not want the DLC island.
No one is bothered about the actual Director's Cut bundle, as like you said, it's essentially a GOTY edition with a different name.
@blinx01 I didn't know that, as I just saw all these comments on here and elsewhere going on about a $70 Director's Cut which I just saw as the base game, dlc etc and to me that just looked like GOTY edition that we've had those for decades that wasn't sure of the problem people had with it.
Like Dying Light Platinum Edition just announced for Switch for 50 with all the content.
@masofdas I literally don't care lol. I was making a slightly sarcy comment just to annoy ps5 fanboys. Not that I need to, I suppose. Gamepass and all that
