Update: Ubisoft has now confirmed the existence of Assassin's Creed Infinity, but has not elaborated on reports that it will be a live service project. According to Ubisoft, Infinity will be "evolving along with the video game industry".
Original story: After the success of recent entries such as Assassin's Creed Valhalla, it looked like Ubisoft had found a great new formula for the franchise, but it seems a substantial change may be on the horizon. According to a new report, the series is moving to a "massive online platform that evolves over time" under the guise of Assassin's Creed Infinity.
The report comes from Bloomberg, claiming the game will include "multiple settings with room to expand to others in the months and years following its debut". This means we could be seeing multiple eras and locales as part of the experience.
Bloomberg added that "details surrounding the project, which hasn’t been previously reported, are in flux, and it’s still years away from release", but will draw inspiration from games such as Fortnite and GTA: Online - games which are based around a constantly evolving world with new content.
While studios in Ubisoft usually alternate development on Assassin's Creed, both Montreal and Quebec studios will be coming together to create Assassin's Creed Infinity. It's said that "each will have its own creative director, but Quebec will take charge of the franchise."
The author Jason Schreier also expanded a little further on Twitter, stating we may see the game 2024 or later. He added that it "may be some sort of hub that allows people to play multiple Assassin's Creed games both big and small", but Ubisoft could change their mind completely.
It sounds like a huge leap for the series, but whether it can be pulled off remains to be seen. The idea of "live service" can be very off-putting to many, so this may be disheartening to hear. Obviously we know very little so far and the game is still a long way from release, but we'll keep our eyes peeled for more information.

Likely not one for me, unfortunately...
I still don't understand. Fortnite has absolutely nothing in common with AC games. Are they wanting dozens of assassins running around a city trying to kill targets first? Is it pvp where everyone is trying to find and assassinate each other?
Having groups for AC isn't anything new. They tried that with Unity. It didn't work. Players didn't enjoy it when others mess up their stealth runs. It's a fun idea if the group is on the same page but that rarely happens.
Lots of games benefit from multiplayer but AC isn't one of them.
@RedShirtRod maybe they're tryna mimic the way they're handling the vampire the masquerades battle royale game. Which to many doesn't fit in their respective franchises as well.
Wow, this seems like it’s really not for me. If this is true, I hope they will continue to make single player AC games alongside Infinity.
I remember the multiplayer in AC older titles. It was fun, at least for a few matches.
sigh we'll always have Ezio
RIP the AC franchise.
It was a run ride.
Ubisoft, abusing their IPs the way they abuse their staff.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but nowhere in this article does it mention that Assassin's Creed Infinity will be a multiplayer experience. It says that it will be a hub with multiple Assassin's Creed locales and the live service aspect is frequent content updates, i.e. adding more locales. The way I see it, this is a return to form considering they want to have both big and small titles, i.e. games from the old AC formula.
Besides the fact that we won't see more games like Odyssey or Valhalla in the near future, exactly what is negative about this? Personally, this sounds like the best thing ever for AC fans who want to revisit past settings such as Italy and Syria. Not to mention that we know that microtransactions in AC games have always been optional and not "pay to win". So I just don't see how this can be perceived as bad news, especially this early on when we don't know know many details about it.
Remember when you could buy a game and get a complete product?
Good bye AC. It was a nice run.
Just what gaming needs another Fortnite clone
@The_New_Butler My sentiments exactly. No time for this "always online" crap, and I hate to play against pimpled little school kids who have more time to "git gud", making the possibility of achieving even the tiniest modicum of success damn near impossible.
And seeing as I play games for fun and to be entertained, I suppose it's slowly but surely becoming time to fully dedicate my attention to my MASSIVE, multi-platform backlog...
@LtSarge One thing that's always bugged me about games like annual games like COD and Assassin's Creed, is that most of the entries feel like expansions rather than a fully fledged new game.
And I've always wondered why (money) they didn't just go the expansion route.
IF Ubisoft rebooted the series with Desmond Miles back at abstergo, and each year a new expansion came out (i.e. brand new campaign) that focused on a new era, and ever more recent ancestor of Desmond. With the modern day parts being the framing device, and it all builds up to Desmond's big moment (that is something other than what they delivered), then I'd be all for that.
@Richnj Yeah I mean, there's so much potential for this project. People have been saying for so many years now that the modern AC games have lost their identity and don't feel like AC anymore. And now that Ubisoft has announced that they're going to focus on more locales (which implicitly means going back to the old formula), people are still upset, lol. It's too early to have any concrete expectations for this title but on paper it sounds absolutely amazing.
