The ultra-popular GTA V only stuck around for a short while when it was introduced to Xbox Game Pass last year, and the same will seemingly be happening again in 2021, as it's been listed for removal on the official app.
Grand Theft Auto V was added to Xbox Game Pass back in early April, which means it's been part of the service for less than three months, and looks to be leaving either later in July or in the early weeks of August.
We're not supposing it'll return anytime soon, as GTA V is getting a major next-gen upgrade for Xbox Series X and Series S this November, so it looks like we've only got a short time left to enjoy it with Game Pass - at least for this year.
Sad to see GTA V leaving Xbox Game Pass so soon? Let us know in the comments below.

Downloaded it and never played. Disappointed won't get to try the next gen upgrade through Gamepass but not surprised.
Don't think I'll ever complete this game! Played about 40 hours I reckon and doubt I'll finish in time. I'm learning the combination of me, game pass and open worlds doesn't work. I just never finish them in time.
@StonyKL I know what you mean. If I want to play an open world on gpu I will literally not play another game until its wrapped up and if its already been on gpu for some time I probably wont even start it because then Id just stress to finish it.
I feel like GTA short stay on gpu was just to get new players hooked and "forced" to buy it to finish the story or online heists.
I downloaded it to try and give GTA Online another go...but I couldn’t be bothered to play through that bloody prologue again (having completed it already on Xbox 360 and PS4 🙄). Why can’t Rockstar give people the option of skipping it ffs?!? Oh well, will be deleting now anyway.
That is pretty dumb. Been finishing off a Yakuza game for the last few weeks, and with GTA5 having been added just a couple of months ago, I figured I'd have plenty of time to play it (again) before it left.
Hope this doesn't become a recurring theme with gamepass games....
GTA and Red Dead, so rockstar games in general, are the ones who decide how long to license out their game on GP, and PS plus. Few months to try before you buy ain't so bad but as a general rule of thumb you should assume any massive open world game (unless it's a Microsoft published game) is a try or die moment.
Briefly played a bit (the prologue and then stole a few cars) to get the recent Game Pass Quest and enjoyed it enough to want to play through the whole game at some point - guess that'll have to wait now as I'm unlikely to have time before it leaves. Maybe just wait for the Series upgrade now...
Surely anyone who cares must have bought this by now, it's constantly on sale for peanuts
Rockstar seems to love using Game Pass as an extended demo, not as a way to actually offer the game through a new sales channel. MS really should be policing that kind of abuse of GP, but since it's Rockstar and the biggest game in gaming (somehow, inexplicably) that won't happen.
A brand-spanking-new PLAYSTATION STUDIOS game has been on Game Pass longer than Rockstar's 10 year old opus. That's just sad.
I beat this game on the 360. Grabbed it on the xbo, solely for first person mode. Your god! It did not disappoint! It's like a brand new game.
@uptownsoul There's a fine line. I agree the nature of GP is as a rental service and the goal is to introduce people to a game, but it also balances a fine line between giving people a chance to play on subscription vs being little more than a demo service you pay for. The way Rockstar uses it feels more like the latter. Paying them for the privilege of a demo. Which is consistent with rentals, but I don't think MS wants GP to devolve into games constantly flying in and out purely as previews rather than value on the service. If it's not much more than a service full of demos and previews, it loses a lot of its value. So far, Rockstar is the only publisher that's abusing the service quite like that.
Especially while Game Pass Cloud is part of the proposition. Since GP doesn't let you stream purchases like Stadia and GeForce Now, if you try the game to play on Cloud, and then buy it, you literally lose the ability to play on Cloud at all, requiring a console or a gaming PC. The way they develop Cloud hinges upon access to these titles in the subscription. At least until they add streaming of your own library (I assume it'll happen someday since the competition offers that, and only that? )
@uptownsoul Maybe, but it's in their own best interest to curate well, because the value proposition of Game Pass depends on it. If it becomes known as something of a trash heap to briefly access trials of full games before you buy them, they're not going to hit their subscriber targets their aiming for. It becomes a pay-for extension of "Free play weekends." I don't think they intend to let that become normal. Rockstar is kind of a special kid-gloves case, I think.
And again, their proposal for xCloud goes right into the trash bin if it's never anything except a game demo service that you pay $15/mo for. Luna and Stadia easily become better propositions. Heck, even PS Now.
I do think they'll generally curate better than that. Rockstar just has 2 games, one of which is the single best seller, possibly of all time. They get "special treatment."
@uptownsoul Maybe. But that does hurt the GP narrative if it visibly becomes a timed demo service you pay money for. That could hurt the huge momentum it's built. Even I'd just jump to stadia for streaming.
No major loss. I'd rather see newer content on GP than Rockstar's tired old cash-farmers.
This is why i only use Gamepass for 1st party games, way less chance of them being removed,
This, ladies and gentlemen, is why owning your games will always be better than renting/leasing them and why I will never be on board with these subscription based services.
