Well, well, well! Konami has silently released a free "online performance test" for eFootball PES 2022, which is currently just called "New Football Game", and you can try it out right now on Xbox One, Series X and Series S.

It's listed on the Microsoft Store under "New Football Game Online Performance Test", and the goal is to "is to "assess the stability and connection quality of our servers, as well as the performance of our matchmaking system."

"Please note that all elements of gameplay (controls/balance etc.) and all visuals are a work in progress. Everything is subject to change, and many of these elements will be improved moving forward.

That being said, we hope this small preview whets your appetite for the official release!"

We haven't had a chance to check it out yet, but the game looks in a pretty rough state right now (with a fair few bugs on display), and Eurogamer has highlighted how the "visuals didn't blow me away," and "the game plays very slow."

That said, Konami has stressed to us that "all aspects of the game" have already been improved and will continue to be improved before the official launch, so it's hard to tell at this point how far along the build is. PES 2022 is being created using Unreal Engine 4 for the first time, after previously using Metal Gear Solid V's Fox Engine since the 2014 version.
