Battlefield 2042 was finally announced yesterday and the content it includes could be seen as lacking, depending on your preference. It’s been confirmed there will be no campaign and only seven maps available at launch. But what’s really stinging fans is the game’s retail price, which is currently sitting at $70/£70 for the Xbox Series X|S version.
Now, it’s important to note there are some differences between the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S version, which unfortunately negates the ability to use Smart Delivery. Next-gen players have been promised larger maps and a player count of 128 competitors. But obviously, the real kicker is that any Xbox One players will have to shell out another $70/£70 if they ever upgrade to next-gen and want the Xbox Series X|S version, or purchase the Gold Edition ($99.99/£89.99) / Ultimate Edition ($119.99/£109.99) ahead of time for access to both versions.
While it’s understandable a next-gen version with more features is more expensive, what adds salt to the wound is that the PC version - which on paper contains very similar features to the next-gen version - will also be $10/£10 cheaper along with the Xbox One version. It’s a baffling choice, and as expected has sparked some controversy.
Many have believed the game could be entering Xbox Game Pass, although a few notable industry insiders don’t believe this to be the case. EA has promised to unveil a “new way to play” Battlefield 2042 this July, but it remains to be seen what that could be.
The pricing strategy for Battlefield 2042 makes sense in theory, but the implication of it just comes across as confusing - especially with many games supporting Smart Delivery and the PC version being cheaper. If you have EA Play or Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, you are entitled to a 10% discount, but for everyone else there's no way to soften the blow.

Waaaaay overpriced.
Yea. Why pay an extra $10 to play on Xbox when I could just save it and get it on PC if I just reeeeeally have to have it day one.
But but but no ones going to pay £70 for new releases right?
Absolute rip off to me, took away single player and the battle royale but increased the price, only EA would do this

This is why Game pass is vital for the future of gaming. At the current next gen game prices the industry is potentially alienating a whole group of people who won't be able to afford to game. It's actually tragic when you think about it. Ignore console wars and set aside this whole ownership debate and try support a system that allows more players from all economic backgrounds to game. Sorry, got a bit preachy there, haha
Its looking like this is going to be an EA Play, Game Pass or Gold/PS+ acquisition! There is NO WAY I am paying that much for a MP only game - especially where some of the content isn't even going to be in the game at launch.
So will it not be playable cross gen?
If it had no microtransaction and a single player campaign I might be interested. But as is its an easy pass.
holy moly this trailer is EPIC! Cant wait to see more of this game. Nice job guys!
It's unfortunate that if/when I eventually download this from Game Pass, EA will still get some compensation. Easily the worst publisher out there. Usually when I have a gripe with a publisher/developer, I'll buy the physical game 'used' but this is going to become more difficult I suspect.
£70 for 7 maps plus expansion pass for the rest of the game... I'm actually speachless.
No campaign no purchase for me.
I don't get why game prices are the same in Dollars & Pounds like we are getting screwed in the UK
I just saw the news that ea was hacked and I can’t help but laugh. I didn’t realize the pc version was $60. I have no idea why they up the price on consoles but not pc.
game wont even have cross-gen platform play lol and tbh we need some actual gameplay reveal of what is really worth buying, otherwise this will "flop" as far as their goals go and be on EA Play by February
Not even cross gen multiplayer. ahaha. I don't know about you but my time with exclusives on PS5 has told me the base is pretty much a ghost town.
Maybe, maybe not cause S is a more appealing to some people and is more widely available, but I just have this feeling the PS5/Series playerbases are gonna be ant sized compared to PCs all inclusive.
Got a pretty big feeling the PC base of this game will be the large one.
This is really just a dumb decision, why are they doing paid expansions at this critical transition time? Do they not want players together??
