Update: No More Robots' Mike Rose has been in touch with us here at Pure Xbox to clarify that the Xbox Series X version of Descenders has managed to add three resolution options including a 60fps variant, which are as follows:
- 1080p120fps
- 4K60fps
- 4Kvariable 40-60fps (everything turned up to absolute max)
Original story: Today's the day for Descenders - the popular downhill freeriding game available on Xbox Game Pass - which has received a totally free Xbox Series X and S upgrade allowing the game to run at up to 120 frames per-second.
However, the specifics are a little more confusing than you might think - here are the exact resolutions and frame rates:
- Series X: 1080p120fps / 4K30fps
- Series S: 1080p120fps / 1440p60fps
Mike Rose from Descenders publisher No More Robots took to Twitter recently to explain that the Series S 1440p mode is "actually around 40fps", but aims for 60 where possible due to being an unlocked frame rate, while the Xbox Series X wasn't able to hit 4K, 60fps due to it being "an incredible ordeal, and not super possible for a tiny team."
Elsewhere, there are loads of other improvements for Descenders as part of this free upgrade, including "far" greater draw distance, shadow distance, higher texture resolution, improved shadows, and much more.
Additionally, this upgrade increases the player count from four players to eight, and allows for crossplay support between Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Steam and Xbox Game Pass for PC players.

One of those games that will probably always have a spot on my hard drive. Nice just to jump on and try the daily quest. I'm excited to see the updated visuals and how it performs.
Another game missing cross-play with PlayStation consoles.
I wonder if publishers are starting to boycott now the public knows Sony are the only ones to charge for cross-play?
I played this a few days ago as part of the Game Pass Quests, but wasn't that impressed. Looked decent enough but the gameplay didn't really click. It wasn't really clear what the point was to be honest - single player didn't really work for me as the tracks are procedurally generated there was no way to go back and improve times/learn the tracks so there was no depth. Maybe online is the way to go, but by the time I'd played a bit of the single player and had a ride around the hub area I'd pretty much lost interest.
@dmcc0 the objectives you've stated aren't part of the way it's meant to be played. It says so in the loading screens, it's not a race. It's about timing your tricks and keeping that going to get as much rep as possible. You get a better chance to get better rewards the more rep you get for each session. Also doing side objectives unlocks bonus maps in each map.
I am however not saying you can't just race through everything, it's just way less enjoyable.
@Cherip-the-Ripper That's fair enough, must've missed that on the loading screens! To me I think it's the procedurally generated tracks that's the issue. With no way to go back and get more familiar with them and learn where you can squeeze in a trick or two where you'd previously hadn't it just seems like grinding 'Reputation' points for no real purpose - sure you get better kit etc but for what? To grind more points it seems. I guess this one's just not for me.
@dmcc0 as far as memorizing tracks and getting better times goes, have you tried the custom maps? They've got a few wipeout inspired maps that are really hard and a fake mexico map among many others. Those are community made I believe, so not procedurally generated. They also have leaderboards tracked by your time for a few or maybe all of the maps, I haven't played all of them yet. (you can also enable a nifty speedrun timer in your settings). There's a few race minded tracks in there as well I'm sure, I just personally haven't checked those out. If you ever feel up for it I would recommend trying one of those.
@Cherip-the-Ripper Thanks for the recommendation, but I doubt I'll go back to it any time soon. I think I played enough to know it's just not for me. I am glad I tried it though.
@dmcc0 you're welcome, glad you got to try it out either way.
Are you looking forward to Riders Republic? That game might be more your thing.
@Cherip-the-Ripper I've not really seen much info on it TBH, but from the little I have seen it seems to be geared towards online multiplayer which is not really my thing. Hopefully it'll have a decent single player mode too - I'll have to check out the reviews one it's released.
