It's time for another round of Pick One! Today, following the release of Mass Effect Legendary Edition earlier this week, we thought we'd take a look back at the series and ask one question - which game did you start with?
Were you there at the beginning with Mass Effect on Xbox 360 in 2007, or did you wait for Mass Effect 2 or 3? Maybe the release of Andromeda in 2017 was your first experience, or even the Legendary Edition this week?
Let's take a look at what we're working with:
Mass Effect (2007)
You are Commander Shepard of the SS Normandy, an elite agent in humanity’s Systems Alliance Military. Explore the galaxy with your hand picked squad of combat, tech and biotic specialists as you race against time to stop a madman bent on galactic destruction.
Mass Effect 2 (2010)
Across the galaxy, entire human colonies are vanishing. As Commander Shepard, you will recruit anelite team of the galaxy’s most dangerous and skilled experts, and lead them on an assault into themost dangerous area of the galaxy - from which you might not return.
Mass Effect 3 (2012)
Earth is burning. The Reapers have taken over and other civilizations are falling like dominoes. Lead the final fight to save humanity and take back Earth from these terrifying machines, Commander Shepard.
Mass Effect: Andromeda (2017)
Mass Effect: Andromeda travels deep into the Andromeda Galaxy, far beyond the Milky Way. There, you will lead our fight for a new home in hostile territory where we are the aliens. This is the story of humanity’s next chapter, and your choices throughout the game will ultimately determine our survival in the Andromeda Galaxy.
Mass Effect Legendary Edition (2021)
The Mass Effect™ Legendary Edition includes single-player base content and over 40 DLC from the highly acclaimed Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2, and Mass Effect 3 games, including promo weapons, armors, and packs – remastered and optimized for 4K Ultra HD.
Let us know which of these Mass Effect games you started with down in the comments below.

2. I never owned a 360 so got 2 on PS3, loved it. Never got round to playing 1 (or Andromeda for that matter), so can't wait to properly get into the Legendary Edition
I've played 1 and 2 and that's it. Prior to launch, I was all set to dive into Legendary Edition, but after watching some actual footage (see: not trailers) my excitement has all but disappeared and I don't think I'll bother.
Played 1 and 2 then Andromeda. ME1 has a very special place in my heart, just loved the whole idea of fighting to save the Galaxy.
Played all in order, one 3 was out. Loved them, done annoying sections (the lift loading screen, lol) but, yes, great.
Not going to revisit this though, to much else going on
@VenomousAlbino what killed your wanting to play it exactly? I'm having a lot more fun with the first one then when I tried to replay it about 3 months ago.
None, I'll start with 1 on the Legendary Edition.
I started with the 1st game, and still think that’s it’s the best of them all. But then it is one of my favourite games of all time.
Played 1 a few months after release. Loved it so much I replayed it multiple times. Then got 2 and 3 day one. Despite its ending, which I settled with but a lot didn’t, it’s one of the best experiences in gaming I ever had. This will be about my fourth or fifth time playing through it
@VisitingComet1 I can't put my finger on what exactly, but nothing about what I saw appealed to me. And I loved ME1 and ME2; the only two instances where I've played through a game twice in quick succession.
Played Mass Effect 1 and 2 back in the day. For whatever reason, I started 3 but never came close to finishing it That'll change with the Legendary Edition someday (I'm doing them in order again) whenever I get to 3.
It'll be a pleasure to get to revisit two of the best action/RPGs I've ever played.
Started with the first one, ended it with the second - I absolutely despised what Bioware did with the second game.
They basically took away all the RPG elements and made it a 3rd person story-driven action-adventure game with an immersion-breaking [expletive] Stage Cleared screen.
I mean, I know, at it’s core, even the original Mass Effect had a set path of “levels”, but at least the game had a seamless flow to it - plus, again, RPG mechanics.
You really need to start with the first to do this series right.
Decided to try the first but the opening was so boring I just wasn't interested
ME2 on PS3. Played the entire trilogy on 360 around the time 3 was released though. Had to start over since I sold my PS3 for a 3DS (worst trade off I’ve ever done, honestly)...
Started with the 1st game after the trilogy came out on ps3.
if you started with andromeda sorry
I started with ME1 on the 360. I started it a couple of months before 2 released so I I went through it as quickly as possible, so I know there’s loads I haven’t seen or done. Looking forward to going through it properly this time. The other day I finally got round to buying the Ezio collection for £10, between just these to collections I’m now set for the rest of this year!
ME1 on the 360. Probably the best timed exclusive on that system, and still my favorite entry in that series.
I’m jealous of the people playing it for the first time right now.
ME1 on 360. Still the best Trilogy of games I have ever played.
The world building and characters for an entirely new IP, not based on an existing book/film/tv, are second to none and still, in my eyes, not bettered since.
I played the demo of 3 before it was released and enjoyed that enough to go out and get 1 & 2
When I got a PS3 a few years later one of my first purchases there was the trilogy collection so that I could replay them again
Started with the second, heard it was the best. It was indeed quite great. Played the first afterwards which I thought was unplayable, the gameplay felt severly lacking. Didn't even wanna try the third one after hearing how they messed up the endings.
