April Fools' Day is over, folks! Microsoft has announced that Sony is bringing its upcoming PlayStation Studios baseball title MLB The Show 21 to Xbox Game Pass on the day of release - April 20. Incredible!
The game will be available for Xbox One, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S when it arrives in just a few short weeks' time, which also marks the first time the MLB The Show series has ever made an appearance on Xbox.
"Both MLB The Show 21 Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S Standard Editions will be included with Xbox Game Pass so members will be able to play the best version of the game regardless of which console they’re on. And with cross-platform play and progress, you can play against others online, and earn and use content across the platform and generation you choose."
We're really excited for MLB The Show to finally make its debut on Xbox this month, but even if we weren't, this is still huge news! We never, ever thought we'd see a PlayStation Studios title enter Xbox Game Pass on day one...
What do you make of this? Hyped for MLB The Show 21 on Xbox Game Pass? Let us know down below.

Hmmm should i cancel my pre-order or is this a late joke by PureXbox....
Sony going after that sweet gamepass money i cant wait to see the "ponys" reaction to this.
I can’t tell if this is true makes me wanna cancel my preorder as its pointless to buy a game ill get for free especially at 70$
Looks like Jim Ryan wants that sweet Gamepass money. It’s like when you can’t fight them, join them! Now waiting to see reactions of those butthurt fangirls and the biased gaming journalists.
So PlayStation owners will have to pay a minimum of €60 for the PS4 version while Xbox owners only have to pay a minimum of €10 through Game Pass..
You'd think at some point there will be a collective realisation from PS users that maybe Game Pass is a good business model after all.
After looking on the web everyone is reporting this i just cancelled my preorder….anyone who says gamepass is a waste doesnt like good games…this is the 5th game in the last year that i didnt have to buy thanks to gamepass.
Woah. That's pretty insane
I'd argue this is a bigger deal than Octopath. This is a straight up competitor putting one of their games on your service. Not a game that was just published by them, it was developed in-house. Wild times.
Maybe it's part of the agreement that allowed it come to XB1/Series X given Game Pass is the platform, not the consoles.
Not really an Xbox fan, but I have to say: the more time goes on, the more the value differential between PS5 and Series S/X is going to become starkly apparent. Especially now that they're charging $70 for all of their games at launch.
It's one heck of an advertisement for the series on Xbox. It's the first one on the xbox and they probably saw it as a way to reach the biggest crowd. Then they wont have it on gamepass next year.
Now that was completely unexpected! I wonder what PushSquare has to say about this.
Actually, what MANY Sony fans will think since they will have to pay $70 for this.
I mean, I guess, in the end, you spend more than $70 after 5 months of Game Pass, but one doesn't just pay for Game Pass for one game - and if you do, you probably play the heck out of it for about a month or 2 and then move on to actually get a great deal.
I wonder what PushSquare and the most extreme Sony fans will say now, too.
Surely it must be a part of some deal to make som of the upcoming Bethesda games none Xbox exclusive. And in turn Sony agreed to let MLB be on Gamepass.
How has Sony agreed to this or has MS been cheeky and done the deal through the MLB?!
I can't see Sony agreeing to have this on Game Pass day one while they charge PS4/PS5 owners full price!
And they won't even have it on PS Now either!
I cannot believe Sony let this happen. Saweet!
@Senua According to the Xbox site, MLB itself published this game on XBox. That means Phil could go directly to MLB and make the deal with them to put it on GPU. I’m sure Phil opened the checkbook and promised millions of players by putting it on GPU. Sony would not need to approve of this. It’s like any developer working for a publisher. Publisher would have final say.
This is crazy! I never ever would have bought this game but my buddies really like baseball do I'll download this to play with them and I'll give it a whirl. Anyone else wondering if Sony will be tracking the data on this to see if it makes sense for them to launch games in their service day n date? That would be great, competition is key for every gamers wallet.
It may be published by MLB but it was developed by PlayStation Studios. You would think Sony would still need to be involved in those discussions as the developer.
Absolutely shocking to say the least, HUGE W for Xbox!!
This has been a bad week for sony ouch
This is nuts. Sony may be testing the game pass marketing strategy to potentially beef up ps now with more day 1 games/exclusives.
This is sonys way of seeing how much revenue gamepass brings, if it's good then I expect sony to bring ps now up to gamepass standard.
Thsi is good news for those who like baseball but me being from the UK I have no interest in baseball 😂 I just want fifa to come to gamepass
If true, amazing as a $70 price tag is insane
I swore this was late April fools. I’m shocked Sony is doing this.
From a revenue perspective and getting Xbox gamers to try it, it makes sense but from a PR perspective not so sure.
Although i'm not interested in this game, nonetheless it's a good news for fans who use gamepass service 👍🏻
@Medic_Alert MLB might be the publishers but they aren't the developers, Sony will still get to see how much money this will bring in
@TrueAssassin86x Funny how you keep on attacking with the same excuses from yesterday. Seems like you didn’t learn any lesson.
@Carck but surely if you're selling a game then it's the developers who get the money? SIE are the developers meaning that a large portion of the money goes to them.
Insane news. This will have many consequences.
@Senua
And yet that poll still sits at 1% i'm guessing youre that 1% and it hasn't grown as that commenter said. Thats ok keep holding that Xbox flag while real gamers play on all systems.
@Medic_Alert Sony studios are the developers but MLB said if you still want the license to llmake our games then it will have to be multi platform to which Sony agreed, but being the developer sony will still get to see some of that xbox money and see sales figures etc as its their right. And depending on how large that money is will depend on how successful it does on gamepass.
Obviously if its successful Sony aren't going to bring its other exclusives to gamepass but they could use this data to see if it's worth improving their own service playstation now.
@SegataSanshiro yeah you have a point as if it was fully funded by sony then it being on xbox would never happen (maybe)
Wouldn't be surprised if sony have only just found out and will react by either putting it on playstation now or making it free with PS plus
@TrueAssassin86x Yeah sure 😂
Funny Sony and Microsoft are doing something together but a lot of you people are dropping your fanboy and pony comments how about you grow up because you people are the problem not them.
They both win they make money wake up.
@Spjnextgen when someone calls someone pony then it's them whos the fanboy...
I've said nothing wrong about gamepass or xbox, I just gave my view on why maybe this happened, no one is arguing just normal discussions
@TrueAssassin86x it's been a bad year, let's be honest. Their games have continued to be a success, and you can't sniff at their console sales, but outside of that the optics of the company has been shocking lately, and it looks worse when put alongside MS's consumer first image
Cool. It'll be the first time I've played a baseball game since nintendos base wars.
@UltimateOtaku91 not all of them are fanboys man some x box players are fanboy aswel just saying we should be enjoying games no matter what console.
BTW how you enjoying monster hunter Rise.
@Spjnextgen it's been really good so far, I haven't put as much hours into it as I would like to yet but I have 10 days off work after today so will play a lot. I don't know if you played Monster hunter world or not but it seems like the monsters in this are taking way longer to kill than in world, or maybe I'm just getting bad luck getting paired with noobs lol
@UltimateOtaku91 it's a faster pace which I like that's why monsters drop a bit more easy glad u like.
In theory if MLB want this franchise to be multi platform from now on then sony could say "go find another developer" next year, it would still be on sony systems as MLB said they want it multiplat.
That would free up sonys San Diego studio to make brand new games and ips instead.
I honestly see no benefit for Sony to keep developing this series from now on and those sony fanboys whining about it should also see the bigger picture
I'm not even mad about this
I've never played any of the Show games since I'm not into sports titles but holy sh*t is the turnout for this hilarious
Honestly it's a win for both Sony and Microsoft if anything since I bet Sony still gets a cut of the revenue from this game given it's first party while Game Pass just continues to be more valuable
@SegataSanshiro this reminds me of the Sony Azure deal with MS. SIE had no clue that they were going to be moving to Ms’s servers.
@Carck I have to imagine they still get some sort of profit out of this considering it's being worked on by a studio Sony themselves own even if they're not publishing it on Xbox supposedly
Otherwise I don't think they would slap the PlayStation Studios logo on that box art since that denotes games that are directly published or developed by them this generation
Either way Sony/MLB getting this on Game Pass only ensures the game is going to get a wider audience. It's a nice little sampling of PlayStation's content for those who don't own PlayStations without immediately spoon-feeding them the big noteworthy stuff
@UltimateOtaku91 "In theory if MLB want this franchise to be multi platform from now on then sony could say "go find another developer" next year, it would still be on sony systems as MLB said they want it multiplat."
It would not had been hard for them to do that when signing this contract renewal. I also am sure their contract is multi-year, so doubt they can just get out of it next year, but either way, it seems Sony knows EA or 2K would jump at the chance to get it, and they rather just keep making money of the full sale.
Besides, given the current trend, I feel chances are if The Show is canceled, San Diego studio will shut down. They are a sport game dev, you cant just transition them to make the next third person action adventure IP.
@Tharsman Isn't there still that secret San Diego studio that Sony's been recruiting talent for over the last 1-2 years that's supposedly working on something major for first party kind of like what the Initiative is doing for Xbox
Unless that's like a seperate entity entirely there's still things going on over there outside of just The Show
Bethesda deal got Sony playing nice..
@Tharsman I never said they have to create yet another third Perosn action adventure, maybe they could get the license for another sport or create their own unique spin off of a sport.
They have also done mod nation, little big planet karting, starblood arena and NBA games in the past. There obvious some talent there that could create something other than MBL?
But yeah for all we know they might have a 5 year contract that they have only just signed so they have a long time to think about it lol
@SegataSanshiro haha yeah fails in comparison to smash but it was still fun, took all my vita space
@SegataSanshiro If All Stars 2 happens they better step their game up on that roster
The fact that Smash has Snake, Cloud, Sephiroth and now Joker while PS All Stars got Raiden and DmC Dante instead of classic Dante is really telling on how much more care Smash puts into its roster choices even with characters that are ironically more closely affiliated with PlayStation
Its not really Sony putting it on Game Pass. Its MLB wanting it on there and making that happen.
That said it will rile Sony up. They will have to respond soon. They could put it on PS Now but that will set a precedent quicker than they would like I'd imagine.
@Jaxx420 Considering it's a Sony developed game and since it's still being published by them on PlayStation consoles I imagine they probably had to also be consented by MLB to even let this happen
I doubt MLB put a Sony first party game on Xbox Game Pass behind their backs. That'd be like if Marvel struck a deal with Xbox to put Spider-Man PS4 on Xbox One despite the fact it's developed by a studio Sony themselves own and is published by them on their consoles
@foobarbaz I mean it's not really free on any platform to be fair
You still have to pay for Game Pass to play it but it does make it more accessible
Some of the PushSquare people are livid about this but honestly it's not as unanimous as I thought it'd be
@UltimateOtaku91 I agree with you that maybe Sony is testing the waters to think about improving PS Plus or PS Now. I will say though that they will need to invest in more companies and games to make something like Gamepass work. Their top tier games are incredible but there’s no denying they are spread out. To make a subscription service work long term you need to sustain it with regular releases. That’s why MS has bought so many studios (alongside Bethesda) and even allowed for more side projects within studios to be tried. They’re trying to get a revolving door going and sustain it mixing up AAA with fun side games in a consistent manner. They’re obviously still building to this but have been preparing for it with acquisitions and heavy investment. Sony would either have to get more studios, buy up more timed exclusives and release them on their own Gamepass or invest in more AA projects that fill in the gaps. Again their top tier stuff is amazing but they only have a handful of studios and each top notch game takes 4-5 years to make now and can be played through in a matter of 20-60 hours with no multiplayer component to keep people there. I don’t think Sony is prepared for a GamePass service. But again, they could also just simply start adding their big hitters day 1 to PS Plus and that might make a difference.
@Carck Yeah but even if MLB owns the license and is publishing the game on Xbox systems it's still a Sony-developed game
Granted Sony probably has a larger stake in Spider-Man compared to MLB but it's still a Sony-made game which means they had to have been at least part of the discussion even if MLB had a larger say
Spider-Man is in an even grayer area considering unlike MLB now, Marvel hasn't self published any video games based on their characters and that would be presumably what would have to happen if the recent Spider-Man games were to go to other platforms outside PC. They don't have a publishing firm like supposedly the MLB does specifically for these games given they're self-publishing it on Xbox, and not only does SIE publish the new Spider-Man games now but they also own the developer who currently has the license which means they probably have a degree of control over the games shared with Marvel to an extent
Unlike MLB taking control over publishing, Marvel just licenses out its characters to other publishers and developers meaning they have a pretty hands off approach in the end outside maybe contributing some of their writing talent to games like what happened with Deadpool, some of the Activision Spider-Man games and Spider-Man PS4/Miles Morales
That is insane! It truly is the best time to play video games.
@UltimateOtaku91 "There obvious some talent there that could create something other than MBL?"
Maybe I'm wrong, but don't think those games were huge hits (NBA maybe, but that license is right now locked on 2K.) My point is that Sony will likely end up giving them the same treatment Studio Japan was given. Talent has nothing to do with anything, on Jim Ryan's eyes. If they don't feel the studio can make another huge money maker, they will shut it down or "reorganize it."
@TheFrenchiestFry the rumors that I seen reported are about a secret studio IN San Diego, not part of Sony San Diego Studio.
@TheFrenchiestFry It’s hard to say what’s being consent to because we know a new contract was made and Sony had to make changes to keep the deal. It’s entirely possible Sony lost more in the new deal than was discussed.
My guess is control over the other platforms versions maybe one of those things. That said it’s also possible Sony is getting some GP money here. It’s just so difficult to say as each one of these contracts can be different.
We are just waffling but I really doubt Sony would have have willing said it was okay to be the game in GP day one considering they don’t even do that for PC games yet.
@mousieone When I say consent I mean that Sony must've at least discussed this to an extent with MLB given they're still developing the game they're publishing so they had to have had a say in the matter before MLB signed off on it in Microsoft
I get the multiplatform thing is mostly MLB's doing but it's still a game developed at SIE and I doubt they didn't have any say in regards to how the game was released to players
@TheFrenchiestFry maybe but day 1? I mean there’s a big difference in a 6 month window and day 1. Sony’s made that clear. I think it might have been mentioned, big emphasis on might, but not we’re going to under cut your customer base kind of thing and put it out Day 1. On the other hand I think MLB did because it’s not undercutting them at all.
It IS possible they had no say in the mater, just as they had no say on it being multi-plat.
Either way, this might be good for Sony. They might still see the game make money, and perform well despite GamePass, that in turn might convince them that adding games day one to PlayStation Now is actually a smart thing to do.
That is amazing! I was considering buying it but have so many other games right now I was going to wait. I will be playing this day one. Gamepass is the best!
I can see it making sense - a game with NO history on Xbox, no community etc - Give it away on Game Pass for a few months, get people hooked and then remove it so people buy to keep playing - maybe 'more' people than if they sold it day 1...
Still never would of predicted this for a Day1 on Game Pass - not that I am interested in any case...
Xbox has pretty much owned the headlines so far this year with Megaton after Megaton in regards to gamepass. These past few weeks have had to change a lot of people's minds on the fact that gamepass is here to stay and Sony will need to adapt and bring PS now up to par. Of course this goes against everything Mr Ryan has previously said about the subscription service not having legs and that it isn't a substanable business model for them to adopt.
The time may be now for Jim and company to rethink some things, because Microsoft has momentum on their side and the resources to back it up.
I just can't compute this, Sony's big sport franchise game I wanted to try for years on PlayStation 4 (but there was always other games my wallet prioritized more) is now day One Game Pass?? I mean wow, I / we finally get to try it without spending a penny on it, but if I was still a purely PlayStation guy I'd be once again expected to fork out some serious notes if I wanted to play it day one? I agree with several posters here, there must be some rather radical discussions going on behind the scenes of these companies right now.
Game Pass really is incredible.
@BlueOcean please tell me you read the pushsquare article and incredible comment section lol
My, are playstation fans worked up over this...
I wonder how they will react when Deathloop and Ghostwire Tokyo end up also launching day one on GamePass PC.... because we should all expect that to happen. The deal only protects them from competing with XBox Console.
This has got the PlayStation fanboys riled up lol.
Go read the Hilarious comments on Push Square about how Gamepass is not sustainable 🤣
@Tharsman “My, are playstation fans worked up over this...”
Not really, it’s a small noisy minority as usual. Both here Push Square and other sites there’s plenty of sane voices not making mountains out of molehills.
Did Vesuvius erupt when Microsoft released a console exclusive VR version of Minecraft (a MUCH more important game than MLB) for no extra cost, day and date on PS4... No. But there was plenty of noise there too.
Don’t make the mistake of conflating Sony fans with the noisy few, as they should’t judge Xbox fans by the noisy fanboys here, who sadly can’t resist popping over to have a dig from time to time.
@themightyant I'm not saying it's all fans, but the biggest supporters are definitively worked up. Not just talking about the commenter, it's just not usual for the reporters writing the articles themselves to be so doom & gloomy about Xbox positive news. Even the journalists are acting as if their favorite basketball team lost a big game.
@Tharsman that’s fair. And to be honest there’s plenty of complaints over on PS about the current pervasive doom and gloom reporting there, it IS a problem. Particularly when there’s plenty to celebrate too, gaming in general is in a great place, and Sony HAVE made some great moves, it’s just currently being over shadowed.
Well MLB did everyone a favor i think because there are a ton of hardcore Sony content creators demanding better from Sony as a result vs. just spinning up false narratives. This gen Xbox is doing so well because of how poorly they handled the last launch and a change in leadership. Will Sony change leadership... maybe not, but i would expect them to start changing their interactions with the fanbase as they are in a world of hurt and everything in the media is Xbox, Xbox, Xbox. They have to pivot somehow. They don't have the capacity or the bank to support a gamepass like model with content so i don't expect day n date 1st party but maybe they will launch it a few months after for a month and then offer a discount? Xbox is killing it and i hope it spurs more competition so that they don't get arrogant and everything flips again next gen.
@themightyant my personal take is that most (not all) PS only journalists and youtbe commentators have always been extremely fanboyish, something obvious in how they trolled all thing xbox for so long. I vividly recall PS reporters calling Phil a liar and making fun of Xbox over this or that.
That kind of personalities will predictably get angry when they start seeing so many power moves by the competitor that they can no longer dismiss them. It's like the sports fan that starts insulting their own team over the fact that the other team happens to have a very good day on the field.
@SegataSanshiro I think it does not mater how much they delay things, once Deathloop and Ghostwire launch, both games are contractually obligated to not be available on Xbox (or Switch) for a year post launch.
So these games coming late just mean an even longer wait for Xbox fans, unless they don't mind playing on PC.
@themightyant
The thing is, a VR version of Minecraft can only be released on platforms that support VR. Hence, it's not available on Xbox. Xbox gamers understand this. MLB The Show being "free" on Game Pass and $70 on PS5 might not seem reasonable to PlayStation fans.
@gingataisen for sure. But they didn’t have to release it on PlayStation at all.
Personally I don’t understand the ire, you win some you lose some. This is life
@Tharsman while I don’t disagree, I do still see it as the minority, and on all sides. Also agree there are more Sony fanboys, though with a much larger market share this is to be expected. There’s plenty here on team green, Steam and red too.
But sadly I see this all becoming more prevalent, especially in the media and YouTube where it seems sensationalist and toxic news sells. Hopefully just a phase 🤞
I think I joked early on that it'll launch in game pass. Jokes on me!
@Krzzystuff Mostly agreed, though I wouldn't say Sony is hurting yet. They're still the hottest selling item by a long stretch short of Switch that's in it's mature phase. How much of that is just because it's scarce, and the bigger brand for a decade and therefore sells itself through FOMO I don't know. I doubt it matters. I don't think the bad decisions today will really hurt them until 5 years from now, or even PS6 when it's really hard and costly to right the ship.
@themightyant toxic news of any sort is all the rage everywhere. Everything is becoming black n white, no middle ground allowed. Unfortunately...it's not just a phase.
Sony: we have the best exclusives!
MS: Actually we have your exclusive now.
Sony:. We believe in the value of owning the games you purchase, and at over $100M to produce, costs need to account for inflation.
MS: Play Sony's latest exclusive for just one dollar.
Fans: That's ok, we love you Sony, I'll just set up my PS3 and play the best classic exclusives.
Sony: err... About that ....
It's pretty wild. If MLB went behind their back and granted MS a deal that uses their own game to promote their competitors value and make them look priced out of their own market they've got to be hitting the ceiling about now. To the point that San Diego Studio is probably already starting their work on a third person action adventure game and EA is hastily fitting an MLB theme into FIFA 21 for 2022 right about now
