Following on from Gears 5's biggest multiplayer update with Operation 5: Hollow Storm, the single player expansion Hivebusters is arriving on December 15.
Gears 5: Hivebusters will be free to download for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate members, to stream through Cloud Gaming or available to purchase separately a $19.99. Additionally, a Gears 5: Game of the Year Edition will also be released on December 15 for $59.99.
Based on the Gears of War: Hivebusters comics, the expansion marks a first for Xbox Game Pass Studios as the first to be added into Game Pass on the day of release. It's also said to feature 16 new achievements, for a 210 Gamerscore total.
Players on Xbox Series X and S will naturally benefit from the extra horsepower of those consoles, as detailed in the official description for Gears 5: Hivebusters:
In the new expansion, play as Lahni, Keegan and Mac – the heroes introduced in Gears 5’s Escape mode – in their first mission as part of the secretive Hivebuster program. Thrown together and dubbed “Scorpio Squad,” their suicide mission to destroy a Swarm hive may hold the key to saving Sera and their own redemption.
- Enjoy a new, 3-hour campaign set on the volcanic Galangi islands. The island lava flows and sandy beaches are crawling with Swarm and a deadly new predator.
-Use and upgrade Ultimate Abilities in a campaign story setting for the first time.
-Up to 3-player co-op, split-screen or online.
-16 new achievements to unlock for 210 Gamerscore.
-The expansion supports Gears 5 Xbox Series X|S optimizations, including reduced load times, quick resume, variable refresh rates and 4K HDR Ultra visuals on Series X.
It's looking like a high octane campaign and the trailer above shows a slightly more tongue-in-cheek approach than we're usually accustomed to with the Gears of War series. All in all, it's looking like good old-fashioned Gears fun and a great treat for the holidays.

can't wait to play it..
I have been waiting for this. And I love that it’s coming to Game Pass! 👍🏻
Love this series. The Coalition does great work. I really hope they tie the series up in Gears 6 and we can see them try a new IP.
Will play it on PC over christmas, the best way to experience it. Buying it separately since I'll never support Gamepass and what it has done to Microsoft game design
@Menchi What has it done?
@Hypnotoad107 Absolutely nothing aside from breathing new life into games people didn't buy and gave them a second chance at audiences.
@InterceptorAlpha That’s what I was thinking. I’m playing Call of the Sea today. Really enjoying it. Probably wouldn’t have played it if it wasn’t on GP. The main reason I want Xbox to succeed is because I don’t want to have to go back to playing games the way I use to pre-gamepass.
@Hypnotoad107 Microsoft making games as "gamepass fodder". Quantity over quality. Like the coalition's new "AAAA" game as they liked to call it. Planned to be short and episodic on gamepass.
Nice! Will give it a go when it's out! Is it like a standard style mini campaign or does it play like Escape mode. (I don't know what escape mode is, I've only played the main gears 5 campaign)
@Hypnotoad107
I completely agree. The Coalition has done an amazing job picking up this series after that douchebag Cliffy B & Epic left it.
With that being said, I am not sure Microsoft is gonna let them do a new IP. We still need Gears Of War (yes, I stubbornly stick to that name) 6. And I am not sure I want them to. With 23 studios, they have others to work on other (and new) IP.
But, who knows?
Will def try this on gamepass. Wasn’t a huge fan of 5, but it’s a nice excuse to get back into the game. Will give me a chance to replay it all over again. Also suprised no one has mentioned the ridiculous pricing £14.99(uk)for a 3 hour campaign? Absolute joke.
