The Xbox Series X is fantastic at running backwards compatible games with unlocked framerates, and 2008's Grand Theft Auto IV on the Xbox 360 happens to be one of those titles - running at a smooth 60FPS on the system.
However, as fantastic as the performance is, one Redditer discovered recently that the game's final mission becomes near-impossible to complete as a result, which requires you to repeatedly tap the A button to climb into a chopper. The problem? Seemingly, the framerate is now too high to register enough taps of the button correctly.
This Reddit thread is filled with comments suggesting potential solutions, and the original poster eventually managed to finish the mission by activating copilot mode on the console and using vibrating toothbrushes to rapidly press the A buttons on both controllers. Nope, we're not making this up!
"IT WORKED. I couldn’t stop laughing. You have to have the head of the toothbrush on the controller so the a button is pressed down, but literally no further pressure on it. The vibration will do the rest of the work. I’ve probably done some lasting damage to the controllers but hey! I’ve completed a game I started 10 years ago!"
It's worth noting that PC players have been reporting issues with this mission for some time, and it's reportedly even a problem on Xbox One X, so you might have run into it before. The best solution is to boot up your old Xbox 360 and finish the game there, but at least there's a potential workaround if you don't have access to one!

That last mission was a huge pain even before this issue.
And that’s hilarious about the toothbrushes!
Don't forget to floss in between those buttons.
Crazy stuff.
This is why anything less than 60fps is a technological failure. If it had been 60fps like it should have been from the start (but was instead not designed correctly for the hardware) this wouldn't be an issue.
Also, can we just get rid of button mashing events?
If the game was designed to run at 30fps, why even allow it to run at 60fps (even on PC)? Should have just locked the framerate across the board.
I realize that, at the time, neither console was going to achieve 60fps for this game. But why even have an uncapped framerate on console at all?
Unless Rockstar does some kind of a patch on the 360 version of the game (which is highly doubtful), Microsoft may have to cap this particular title to 30fps.
@WCB and don't use mouthwash to clean them.
So that's why I couldn't beat that mission when I played it on the One X. I thought it was my controller's A button playing up. Now I know I don't need to waste the time downloading it to the Series S to try again with the new controller.
Death to QTEs and cutscene button mashing!
@NotoriousWhiz This. It was so much cringe to boot Miles Morales and find the first things the "next generation" had me do on my PS5 was "mash square"
I beat the game a few nights ago. It was noticeably harder, but I vibrated the button and had no issues.
Did this get fixed, or is it going to be fixed, if anyone knows?
