Xbox Smart Delivery will provide you with a free next-gen upgrade for participating Xbox One titles on Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, but does that mean you'll need to download them all over again? Not necessarily.
As confirmed by Xbox director of project management Jason Ronald, if the Xbox Series X|S detects the Xbox One version installed on your system, it'll simply update the title accordingly without requiring any input on your part.
Of course, you'll need some kind of external storage device to move your games across from Xbox One to Xbox Series X|S, otherwise you will need to download them from scratch / use physical game discs.
We've been assuming auto updates would be the case for a while, but it's nice to get some extra clarification all the same. Xbox appears to be doing everything it can to make that next-gen transition as smooth as possible!
How many Smart Delivery compatible games do you have so far? Let us know in the comments.

In exactly 3 weeks I'll have the series X in my hands. Lets gooooo!!!!! Also, smart delivery is awesome.
@AJDarkstar Anything classed as 'Optimized for Xbox Series X|S' will require running off the internal SSD / expansion card, so I'm 99% sure that includes Smart Delivery upgrades for Xbox One games.
@FraserG exactly any smart delivery game technically Is. A full xbox series title itself just you don't have to pay for the next gen version. (Plus a few other things)
To say it will auto move to the internal ssd ... No idea but my guess is it wouldn't
@Terrin I'm assuming it'll auto update wherever you've stored it, and then you'll have to move it across to play it.
That sucks cause I'd rather just stay with the Xbox One version so half my internal storage isn't taken up just from Xbox One games
@LX_FENIX I'm sure you can disable it, on the One X you can turn it off the auto-update for X enhanced games.
@thejameswhogames
Sadly for even on playstation to get the free upgrade such as smart delivery or here is the free next gen it's same platform online ala xbox one to xbox series or ps4 to ps5.
@thejameswhogames oh for that you are set you get both verisons.
Edit: to clarify on your xbox series you will have that verison.
@thejameswhogames Smart Delivery just means you'll always get the correct version regardless of which console you're playing on.
So if you're on Xbox Series S, you get that version. If you're on Xbox Series X, you get that version.
The upgrade part of it is only for people who want to move across from Xbox One to Xbox Series X/S.
Finally I have the answer I’ve been searching for and it’s the best answer.
@thejameswhogames correct
@thejameswhogames Yep, that's how it should work.
Smart delivery is awsome..
So if you buy the disc version of a game, what version is actually on the disc? Also, won’t you still have to download higher-res assets if you have a Xbox One game, then transfer it to your XSX?
So I've got all my old Xbox One X games on external SSD and HDD. Will it smart delivery update them on those drives? Do I need to transfer them to the internal? Will it offer or force to move games from external to internal? Just the smart delivery games?
I'm probably more confused now than ever
@Nightcrawler71 That's probably where the "auto update" comes in. It will presumably download the missing things needed for the next gen version, rather than the entire game again.
@Thretosix
They are still regularly 'unlocking' games for people that have these preview units.
I imagine different games are further along with the next-gen patches.
We've not seen Forza 4, Grounded, Ori or Sea of Thieves yet.
They still have another 3 weeks to drip feed previews.
@Thretosix if you’re thinking of the same bit in the Digital Foundry article as me I think they were referring to the hardware itself. They go on to say they still can’t talk about the UI from memory
I have a question about this will people who have discs say the Witcher 3 do you put the disc in the series X to get it upgraded?
@AJDarkstar it would need to run off the internal drive for it to be optimised but running from an external would be pretty much the same as they play now, from what I understand
