Out of nowhere, various outlets have been dropping their first unboxings and previews of Sony's PlayStation 5 today, which means the inevitable Xbox Series X vs. PS5 size comparison has arrived!
These initial photos come courtesy of The Verge, and show the PS5 to be a significantly bulkier console than the Xbox Series X (as expected), while the Xbox Series S looks tiny in comparison to Sony's behemoth!
You can also check out another real world comparison between the Xbox Series X and PS5 in the timestamped video above, in which CNET compares the size and weight of the two systems, as well as their controllers.
Are you happy with the sizes of the Xbox Series X & S compared to the PS5? Let us know below.

It'll definitely be an attention grabber that's for sure! Still prefer the simplicity of the X but I think all 3 of them look good!
I still genuinely think the GameCube is the best looking console ever.
Here comes the usual suspects living in an eternal state of denial.
I actually quite like the look of the PS5 and is the one I have preordered but will never actually play, that has been sold on eBay and I've bought a Series X preorder to replace it.
That said all 3 look really nice and the Series X has a nice simplicity to its design
Being PS guy i like series x's look more
That PS5 is a monstrosity. I'm not entirely enamored with the design of Series X but at least it's simple enough that I'll probably never even notice it. The PS5 is just plain ugly.
I've gotten used to seeing the PS5 and don't think it's glaringly ugly anymore...just grows on you. I still like the simplicity of the Series X but when you see them together it's crazy how massive the PS5 is. Sony needs to be doing a collaboration with Ikea for a unit that fits it and provides airflow cuz that's a huge b!$@#
Admittedly the XSX is a tad boring to look at, but I prefer it to the PS5 - that thing is just soooooo big! Not to mention too many bits sticking out. I may wait for the inevitable PS5 slim.
I am in the camp that didn't like the PS5 design and it is not growing on me or anything either. It looks a lot better when you look at it from the sides and see a white wavy thing. But straight from front (either vertical or horizontal) it doesn't get any better.
I like the PS5 and Series S designs personally. The Series X is OK but a little...sterile, I guess? It's my least favourite out of the three but I think they're all good!
I like the look of all three. Size doesn't matter to me (don't make the joke), unless it's a handheld/portable.
PS5 looks uglier every single time.
Yeeessh, the PS5 certainly stands out.
Not sure how I feel about how reflective the PS5 seems to be as well.
Holy heck that thing is massive! Or is the Series X Just small? No..no....it's notably bigger than X1X.......PS5 is just freaking massive!
As is in their real life forms, I much prefer Series X. I have to say the design concept of the PS5 has grown on me, and if it were a substantially smaller device, I might actually prefer its design. It's bold and will be iconic. But at its actual stature it just looks like a ridiculous proof of concept right out of the 80's that's trying to show how "futuristic" it is rather than blending into the 80's aesthetic.
It's not going to be fun at all trying to find a place for that thing.....it's definitely not going to be able to go where I currently have the consoles.....I'm not even sure there's a well ventilated space I can fit it....
@sandman89
The presenter of this video is a right bell end! Oh it’s a thing I have to use a stand...
Anyway I prefer the Series X I think, the PS5 is just far too big.
Few issues with the PS5 design:
The size (I mean, that's obvious).
The super glossy black section will pick up so much dust, and cleaning it will likely result in a few scratches and scuffs here and there.
Laying it flat makes it look like it's floating, and not in a cool way.
My only major turn off with the Series X is that you can't remove the stand.
Series X looks so much better..
How it looks isn't a big deal, but the series x looks smart and the ps5 looks like some 80s reject design
i just can't seem to warm up to the PS5. maybe when it has a different shell on it. it's just hideous to me. i don't even like the design of the DualSense. i would love to see some of the designs that Sony rejected....
@Medic_Alert Yes his obvious bias shone through and as I said, he just looks like a bell end.. incredibly unprofessional moaning about a stand.. with the ‘wow look at how easy it is to lay he Series X on its side ooohhhh...’ and ‘it’s a thing thuh the stand it’s a thing...’
Very poor. It’s a piece of plastic and he obviously dislikes it.
@S1ayeR74 Well, the huge size and the complicated stand of PS5 are noticeable differences, why ignore them just to avoid unfounded suspicion and wouldn't it be more biased to ignore the size and the weird stand when comparing the consoles?
Now that Playstation 5 show you can change the outside shell, a black one look cool. I'm now on the fence if I should get a PS5. Maybe a year or two when it has enough games I like to warrant a purchase. I not on that now because my Xbox Series X pre-order from Microsoft Store is the only thing I'm focused on now.
I have a series x pre ordered and prefer xbox gaming, that said- I think the PS5 looks cool. I appreciate the unassuming design of the Series X, it wont stand out in my living room and that is fine by me. However, the PS5 looks like its from the future.
@BlueOcean I don't get the fuss about the stand. It's the exact same type of stand Sony used on PS4 and PS4 Pro as well for vertical use. There's nothing unexpected about it other than that it's also needed for horizontal placement. But with a device of that magnitude, who actually has the table (or floor!) real estate to lay it horizontal anyway?
Series X does look a little weird sideways with the stand, though I realize the point is to keep the intakes open.
I was surprised that Phil actually runs his horizontal. I may end up doing that too. The large exhaust vent pointing upward makes me worry about dust and objects falling into it when the fan's not running with where I'll have it. I still wonder if it could support PS5's weight when horizontal and make a gaming stack
@Olliemar28 Hush, if you remind them that gloss black plastic picks up dust and then looks scratched over time, they'll go the other way like PS4 and make a console entirely out of black dyed milk jug plastic again..... PS4, both the original and the Pro feel like they're made of dollar store plastic sheeting. I thought I hated the glossy PS3 Phat until I had to touch the PS4. It looks and feels like it was rough sanded to remove a botched finish. The dye job isn't even uniform in color probably due to how the thermoplastic does (or doesn't) hold pigment.
As ugly as the PS5, especially initially, is, the first thing I thought when I saw it is "oh good, it won't look like a "reconditioned pre-owned" console out of the box!"
@Luigi_Skywalker It looks like it's from what corporations and product designers told us to think the future looked like in 1986. In a sense they were right. In the year 2020 we got the PS5 that looks exactly like they told us 2020 would look, back in the 80's.....
@NEStalgia The PS5 stand is not a problem, it's just complicated and weird if you compare it to Series X, Xbox One X, Xbox One S and PS4.
I'm going to place Series X horizontally but I don't understand what's the problem with the Series X stand that you don't see when it's lying on a shelf or inside a TV cabinet. If you are going to put Series X on a table or on top of a cabinet you're probably going to prefer the vertical orientation anyway.
@BlueOcean I haven't quite figured out where mine are going. They're out on the floor right now, but with the bottom intakes, carpet will need something under it, and I do worry about things falling into the large vent holes at the top. So I might go horizontal . But it'll probably still be out "in the open". It doesn't look bad, but it's a little mark against its visual design. Just nitpicks in a conversation about visual design.
@NEStalgia Indeed, no big deal compared to the enormous size of PS5 as these videos reveal 😂.
The PS5 is just massive and it's design doesn't even look good. I definitely prefer the look of the Series X.
Lol! 73% of people prefer the design of a box. Wow.
PS5 Is big and is massive! I feel sorry for anybody who has to try and fit that into an entertainment center.
Xbox Series X appeals to me the most this upcoming generation. That includes the design of the console. The only thing that's wowed me about the the PS5 is the size of it, lol.
@NEStalgia lol, that must be why I feel that way. I am a child of the 80s
The PS5 is a hideous behemoth of a console.
I much prefer the look of the XSX.
As it is I prefer XBSX. The issue for me with PS5 is the size, I think the design itself will look really good in a Slim revision
The XSX is a beautiful mini fridge. I like simplistic design, and I am feeling that with the Series X.
The PS5 looks more like an expensive toy. With cheap plastic and a design by a 5-year old.
Aside from my personal taste for Xbox as a brand, I prefer the design of the Xbox Series X. Smaller and fitting my available living room space.
But I guess while I wait for a price drop the usual "slim" version will have been announced. Who knows?
@sandman89 I'm still quite partial to the OG NES. But the Gamecube is up there for sure.
