Bungie has confirmed today that the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S optimised versions of Destiny 2 will arrive on December 8th, with the game presumably available via backwards compatibility until then.
The game will run at 60 frames per-second with faster load times, cross-generation play and a field of view slider on both systems, with the Xbox Series X displaying at 4K resolution and Xbox Series S at 1080p.
In the meantime, you'll be able to get hands-on with the new Beyond Light expansion on November 10th, which will also be included with Xbox Game Pass. And when it's time to upgrade to the next-gen version, all content and any expansions you might own will also be carried across via Smart Delivery.

I’ve got right back into this lately, after a hiatus of at least a year or longer. I had the game on my PS4, but when I found out that all of the expansions (current and future) are on Game Pass I wanted to start playing on Xbox...then I found out about the awesome cross-save feature, meaning I could take my PS4 character onto my Xbox! Cool. I’ve been putting in several hours a week (if not more) ever since. Looking forward to the optimisations on my Series X in December!
