We can't believe it either, but today marks exactly five years since Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain was released for Xbox One on September 1, 2015. Where does the time go?!
Of course, The Phantom Pain is still the most recent entry in the main series, and was preceded by Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes in December 2014, with the two games eventually being packaged together in a 'Definitive Edition'.
The game received extremely high praise at release, winning multiple Game of the Year awards and holding a massive 95 rating on Metacritic, which makes it one of the highest-rated Xbox games of all time on the site.
Nine years after the events of MGSV: GROUND ZEROES and the fall of Mother Base, Snake a.k.a. Big Boss, awakens from a nine year coma. The year is 1984. The Cold War serves as the backdrop as nuclear weapons continue to shape a global crisis. Driven by revenge, Snake establishes a new private army and returns to the battlefield in pursuit of the shadow group, XOF.

To those PushSquare fanboys that say that I'm an Xbox fanboy, I played Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain on PS4 because they looked better than on Xbox One. I liked both but, boy, The Phantom Pain can be extremely frustrating. I beat it, though, including those pointless final missions. I remember how many times I wanted to throw the DualShock through the window. In my opinion, the story is rubbish, like everything that Kojima writes, but the gameplay is fun and the graphics look incredibly well for being 60 FPS. It's a pretty good game.
Wow, crazy it's been that long. Still have the both on my library and I'll get to them one day (probably not lol). Was enamored with the first 3 but 4 didn't really keep my interest when it was released. Hope they redo the legacy collection for next gen!
I’ve finally just bought it. In that sale
I never got around to playing it myself!
I have never played it because I thought MGS 4 was very overrated. I did love the original MGS and MGS 3, however.
In terms of gameplay, MGSV is phenomenal, but there was so much wasted potential with the plot. I must say though, I do still go back to it occasionally and play through a few missions.
I've loved every Metal Gear Solid game, and while I understand the concerns about the V's story, I think it adds a lot of much needed context to MGSIV's narrative and its characters.
The Truth Tapes specifically, I wish weren't tapes, but cutscenes. I'd have loved to see Zero's epiphany about the Boss's Legacy rendered in that Fox Engine. Playing MGS4, and seeing Big Boss have that same epiphany, and me knowing that had he just talked to Zero, had he had that opportunity, the GW AI would have never came into existence, and the Patriots would never have been such a huge threat to the world.
But Skullface had to interfere, and when Zero came to Big Boss, now with onset Alzheimer's, it was too late.
Big Boss was in a coma, and Big Boss's plans would already be set in motion.
Well, at least I can dream.
Best gameplay in the series, but most disappointing story wise. Game had so much potential that Konami cut short. I say it came out two years too early.
