Various content creators have been getting their hands on the Xbox Series X over the past week, specifically testing backwards compatible Xbox One games using the system's internal SSD.
As a result, we've got plenty of load time comparisons to peruse over between the Xbox One X and the Xbox Series X, and you can see some examples of these courtesy of GameSpot and The Verge below:
Game | Xbox One X |
Xbox Series X |
Assassin's Creed Odyssey | 1 min, 7 seconds | 30 seconds |
Control | 58 seconds | 10 seconds |
Final Fantasy XV | 1 minute, 11 seconds | 13 seconds |
Red Dead Redemption 2 | 1 minute, 35 seconds | 52 seconds |
Sea of Thieves | 1 minute, 21 seconds | 20 seconds |
The Outer Worlds | 27 seconds | 6 seconds |
These are just a few examples of the many that have been reported, but the general feeling appears to be unanimous that the Xbox Series X's internal SSD (and the Expansion Card) has a major effect on load times for Xbox One games.
As for loading these games off an external SSD, VentureBeat tested Assassin's Creed Odyssey with impressive results (just slightly slower than the internal SSD), but a standard USB HDD took nearly three times as long.
Happy with these reported load times? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Given the fact that none of these titles are yet optimised for XVA is pretty great.
That is significantly quicker! Pretty impressive considering I have played some of the games listed above and they did take too long to load for my tastes.
And that's compared to the One X! It's gonna be a huge difference to me who's been playing on a One S, can't wait for November 10th!
Hmm. Great there is improvement I guess but I really thought this would all be instant. Isn't that the motto of this gen? Red Dead 2 (which is one of the games I'm waiting to play next gen) isn't even half the load time when, in truth, I must have fallen for the marketing of "no more load times". And this is old gen games, not even the new stuff?
Am I allowed to be disappointed?
@Medic_Alert Don't forget, these games aren't optimized to use Velocity Architecture. They are relying solely on SSD speed alone.
I have a feeling that games that use VA will load even faster (perhaps consistently between 5 - 10 seconds). I think some games will be instant, but not all.
Even control was only six times faster. Hopefully @Senua Is correct because in theory the velocity architecture should be 40 times faster than Xbox One X. These will probably still be in decompressed with the CPU rather than the custom hardware because otherwise this performance is very bad. If properly optimised for the series X none of these title should’ve taken more than three seconds to load.
Nice i have a pretty big backlog of Xbox One games, Can't wait too play them on series X..
@Bezbot and even more for us on an OG launch Xbox One
@Ryall Check this out. This is just mind blowing. Also remember this Capcom title is running on backcompat.

@Ryall That's why games run almost as fast on the external SSD, none of these games are optimised for Series X.

Once old/new games make use of Velocity Architecture, the loading times should be strikingly fast.
I am disappointed in the red dead redemption load times it is still better than what it is now though. The other game I really would like to see is the Witcher 3 I beat the main story but never finished the dlc every time I would die it felt like a five minute ordeal.
@VisitingComet1 The Witcher 3 is getting a Series X patch next year, I'd wait for that. I still haven't played the game.
@StonyKL I was disappointed too, but I expect all next-gen games to have almost instant loading times on both the XSX and the PS5.
It will be weird however, to have Bloodborne load a level in 6-10 seconds and Demon's Souls in 1 second.
All said and done, 50 seconds for RDR2 is attrocious for an SSD. Really hope that Rockstar will patch it to load in 5-10 seconds and have better textures and assets. GOTY for many people, it deserves it.
Really interested to see Witcher 3 running optimized on both consoles.
I agree that the red dead is a massive improvement and I do understand that it is not made for the series X. Hopefully they will release a patch or a version for it. I've done a lot in read dead I need to finish it though.
Its a big difference but I'll be more interested to see how fast games actually designed for it load up
@StonyKL there's only so much you can do when the game isn't coded to take advantage of the hardware. Look at the Demon Souls video as new environments are loaded within a couple of seconds as to what games should do when designed for Series X and PS5
Glad to have my external ssd, even if it's quite small,
on saying that it'll take me a while to fill up to the 802 internal
I have no plans to buy either a Series X or PS5 anytime soon, but it occurs to me now that I will probably get a Series X to replace my One S at some point, even if I decide to get a PS5 first. As it will play all Xbone games, and run them better than the original hardware, it is a logical pick up when prices drop a bit, even if I have a PS5 and am not interested in any exclusives.
Welcome to 2010 xbox fans. Your gonna love it.
@grimsbyjimby
Troll much?
This is great seeing the big differences in load times. I am playing FH4 on my One S & the load times can be pretty significant.
