Update: Ubisoft has reached out to Polygon to clarify that this doesn't apply to North American Collector's Editions - physical discs will be provided for all platforms in that region.
Original story: This is a bit of a strange one! Ubisoft has revealed that anyone who pre-orders the Collector's Editions of Assassin's Creed Valhalla, Far Cry 6 and Watch Dogs: Legion will receive digital codes rather than physical discs for those games on Xbox - but the same doesn't apply to PlayStation.
Here's what the official Ubisoft support website says about it:
Pre-orders for Collector's Editions of Assassin's Creed Valhalla, Far Cry 6 and Watch Dogs: Legion for Xbox will receive a digital key to redeem, instead of a physical disc.
Collector's Editions for PlayStation will receive physical game discs.
The remaining content of your Collector’s Edition will still arrive through the post as normal.
To be completely clear, the Collector's Editions of these games are only available exclusively from the Ubisoft Store, and come packed with a whole bunch of extra goodies at at a premium price. As far as we know, the physical Standard and Gold editions available at a wide variety of retailers aren't affected by this.
But even so, this one's left us scratching our heads! Why do you think Ubisoft has decided to ditch physical discs for Xbox exclusively? Share your theories with us in the comments!

People still buy these editions? 🙄
A collector's edition without a physical game is absurd but, then again, the discs work like keys and will get digital patches on PS5.
That sure is weird, I get dropping disks but just for one half of the consoles is just off.
Staps tinfoil on to head
We heard Sony made lots of deals with third parties getting "whatever they could" what if this is some weird PR move by sony. Now the Playstation edition has better "value" than the Xbox offer.
Clearly they have no faith in Xbox going forward. They took millions in marketing money for FC6 and ACV, but won't make discs for a platform they won't sell on
Hmm strange decision but que the PlayStation conspiracy theories. They will recieve some backlash and reverse their decision, calling it now
I'd guess this is a result of the next gen consoles. Maybe smart delivery only works with digital copies on Xbox meanwhile PS5 upgrades work with physical copies or the Series X isn't an affordable price meanwhile the disc PS5 is (Series S is rumoured to be digital only)?
There's still a lot we don't know about the next gen consoles.
That is bizarre on so many levels. So Ubisoft is going "digital only" - only one one of the consoles......and only on their most expensive collectors edition......and stripping the "bill me anything!' collectors of the physical swag, only. And they're doing it on the only console, thus far, not confirmed to have a discless version even available..........
@Grumblevolcano it can't have anything to do with affordability or smart delivery - there's still an XSeX physical disc - in every edition except the premium absurdly priced collectors edition with the statue. So for $59.99 you get a physical XBox disc, but for $249.99 only PS5 gets a disc........ The fact that it's the collectors edition only that's doing this invalidates any physical, economic, or practical reason for it. It's just Ubisoft shoving their Stick of Truth up their Fractured But Whole for no reason, as usual.
Why Viking women figure and not the guy? When I picture a Viking in my head it’s never a woman. Is it one of those modern bs moments. Politically correct 🤷🏻♂️ I don’t know I’m just rambling
This isn’t Sony.
Series S doesn’t have a disc drive and that’s the one the general populace will buy. PS5 and PS5 all digital wont have a huge price gap between the systems.
@mousieone how do you know what most people will buy we haven’t even seen it yet and nothing confirmed
@NEStalgia It hasn't been confirmed the standard Xbox edition will be a disc. It could be that all Xbox games that have "Series X" on the boxart are just codes in a box.
@NEStalgia Reminds me of the Halo 5 Legendary Collector's Edition. All the big fancy stuff, and a digital game code unless you went through the hoops to get it replaced. While the normal and special edition both had discs.
@sandman89 well pretty sure Ubisoft knows the prices even if we don’t know. If the Series S is significantly less powerful than XSX there is no way they can charge anywhere near the same price. There has to be at least 100 difference with a gap that large.
Now, we in the gaming community prepare for this, and will buy what we want. That’s why they are taking care to market XSX to us because they know we care about what’s under the hood more. But the general populace? Yeah no they’ll buy cheap in this Covid economy.
Can you see parent purchasing a 500 machine over a 300 dollar one because Junior wants it? Maybe but I’m going to say the majority of people won’t.
@Grumblevolcano It's possible that the standard edition doesn't have it either, but I, honestly, find it hard to believe that MS would redo the whole "XBone" launch disaster again as the only option (rather than premium or low end options with/without disc), and I find it hard to believe they'd include the disc drive for no purpose at all other than BC and video playback. I really can't fathom that they'd be forcing digital after what trying to do that cost them in 2013. If they don't learn from that, there's really no hope for them.
This is coming from someone who bought X1X explicitly to be all digital and has no intention of buying physical xbox games: If they did that that would give me serious pause as to whether I'd buy. It would indicate they don't listen, and don't learn.
@Menchi Yeah, that definitely feels familiar. I wonder at times who the execs are that make these decisions that are clearly so out of step with their customers. The collectors aren't the ones you strip the goodies from.
@mousieone we’ll see 😊
That’s weird. But then again, with these being codes, I expect there to be craploads of them on cdkeys eventually. Where I have purchased some Xbox games for ridiculously cheap.
@sandman89 Umm sure. Funny though, I’ve had the exact discussion when the Switch Lite came out. o.o
@KelticDevil I do, often. Only reason I had not for this game is the big edition wasn't available from Amazon, had no clue I had to go to Ubisoft for it.
This is actually annoying because I would had gladly changed my order to this edition, but not if the only means to get a disk is buying the PS4 version. Although I could still sell that PS4 disk, if give it to someone for Christmas...
@sandman89 based on historical evidence, vikings women were also warriors.
We also know that Ubisoft developers been trying to make female-led games but the best compromise they gotten so far is "we let you have a female option".
Kassandra has been clearly labeled by the devs as the canon protagonist, even if marketing never allowed it. Maybe they finally getting close to get there, and openly state in marketing the canon character is a woman.
@mousieone I’ve got nothing against it I just thought it was weird as the guy was in the reveal trailer
@sandman89 I think you might have meant to send this to —> @Tharsman supposedly it’s due to that guy they just fired. He made them add Cassandras brother.
@sandman89 female version comes with the collectors edition. Male version is purchasable on its own, up for pre order on many sites already for £45-£50.
And females were also warriors, so maybe history has been showing you wrong all along and its isn’t just some political bs.
@Jacko11 almost wish it was the other way around because I would just buy the female statue. Maybe I get lucky and they sell both separately?
@mousieone know who you mean but you might have to be more specific going forward, since "that guy they fired" by now describes way too many people 😅
@Tharsman true. Ubisoft is having a mass exodus right now. I’m just not sure it will solve anything.
@Tharsman same tbh. Initially it’ll be in the collectors edition, but a week later on eBay separately.
Happens with every entry
@sandman89 Well, I agree.
@Jacko11 yes but the ebay listing are hit or miss on pricing.
Why would they do that, This makes zero sense.. I'm scratching my head here like WTF Ubisoft..
@Grumblevolcano the Xbox Series X has a disc drive so that would be dumb
@Tharsman trust me, as someone who has the statues for each of the games, they’ll be on eBay and they’ll be around £45-£60.
Definitely a very strange omission. I don't quite understand it myself.
"More exclusivity coming in the future!"
"Sony, please let us play with third-party IPs on other platforms"
"Who said anything about games?"
@playstation_king
Just try to deny Xbox gamers are getting the short end of the stick.
The most premium editions without discs just for the biggest collectors... Awesome.
And one more thing about Ubi Store: - from this year - they only accept orders from inland (doesn't ship to other country). Unfortunately in my country Ubi Store only selling PC keys, so I could't get (or order from UK) Valhalla for Xbox... Great job!
I thought collectors edition were for, you know, collectors?
