Update: The program manager for this event has told us that it's up to the developers whether they want their demos playable after the week is over, so some may choose to "turn them off" afterwards, while others may continue working.
Original story: Microsoft has announced that it'll be hosting an Xbox Summer Game Fest Demo Event later this month from July 21-27, allowing players to try demos of around 75-100 games for free.
The company says that you'll be able to find these by heading to the special Game Fest Demo tile on the Xbox One Dashboard that week, which will feature more than 60 new demos for upcoming, unreleased Xbox games. Many of the demos included will reportedly be early versions which "will continue to evolve and be polished" ahead of release, and they will initially only be available for that week, with some possibly being re-published later on.
The full list of demos will be announced nearer the time, but the likes of Cris Tales, Destroy All Humans!, Haven, Hellpoint, Skatebird, The Vale: Shadow of the Crown, Raji: An Ancient Epic, and Welcome to Elk will all be involved. Many of the games included in the event will be ID@Xbox titles, but not all.
Looking forward to this? Let us know what you think of the idea in the comments below.

Cris tales !?! Awesome
This is a great idea!
And it’s a great way for indie games to show off their stuff.
This is the diversity and transparency in which Xbox excels.
This sounds awsome 👍👍
This is awesome. I enjoyed Steam Summer event. I got to try some amazing games and chat with the devs. I guess E3 cancelation worked better for us gamers.
Will definitely be trying destroy all humans
You guys think, considering the week it is, that we may get Xbox first party demos? Maybe even halo infinite?
@xMightyMatt14x that would be nice if they could do that. I dunno how many games are that far in production, tho.
@mousieone at the very least I’m hoping maybe a halo infinite beta. And maybe a forza demo. Basically for sure launch games. If not I’m sure I’ll still enjoy what’s there. Just hoping
What a good idea, looking forward to this, will certainly try some out...
@FraserG Only available for that week as in "only available for download in that week" or will they also not be playable anymore after that period? (besides the demos possibly being re-published at a later point in time)
@ThanosReXXX It seems they will only be playable for that week. They will "simply evaporate" after that, so yeah... a lot of games to fit in over a few days!
Fantastic idea, this is really cool!!
I love how Microsoft is embracing indie titles & they give them time to showcase their games.
PlayStation buffoon Jim Ryan once ripped indie titles & half of their PS5 E3 show was indie games. And the games didn’t even look that good. 🙄
Congrats to Xbox for coming up with this idea (for consoles) & I hope it generates sales for the games involved. 👍🏻
@KelticDevil
Which indie games didn’t look good at the PS5 event?
@NorrinRadd I don’t know about @KelticDevil But Goodbye Volcano High is on my list.
@NorrinRadd
Bugsnax. 😂
And most of the indie games they showed paled in comparison to Microsoft’s May show where they showed off some really cool games.
But that’s just my opinion.
@NorrinRadd Ratchet and Clank can only run on 30fps devs confirmed and suffered frame drops during world transition in the trailer. Even Forza Horizon 4 looked more next gen with dynamic weather, fluid physics than GT7 honestly.
@KelticDevil
So help me here - which were the impressive games at the MS event in May (it's been a while!)?
@FraserG Guess I'll skip all of them, then. I don't like forced or timed demo play, and I'm currently all wrapped up in things like Animal Crossing. And my gaming time is already limited as it is, so I'd rather play what I know and like, instead of having to force feed myself a lot of new stuff.
I much prefer the old type of demo: download, and play forever, or buy the full game, but at least it's your own decision. No BS timed events, no closed betas etc. etc.
I thoroughly dislike all that kind of stuff.
@NorrinRadd
I thought Bright Memory, Scorn, The Ascent, & The Medium all looked great.
@KelticDevil I agree that all those games looked great. Even better, Scorn and The Medium will be on Game Pass on launch! I'm really hoping Bright Memory and The Ascent aren't $70 games. I don't think they will be but I guess we'll just have to wait and see.
75-100 game demos is a crazy amount. I doubt I'd be interested in even half of those but knowing there will be so many to choose from to demo is great! These next few weeks will be filled with hype and anticipation!
@KelticDevil
Yeah - I thought Scorn in particular looked promising.
@NorrinRadd
I am a huge Aliens fan, so Scorn looks like an H.R. Giger world brought to life in a game. We’ll see how it turns out.
@ThanosReXXX I got in contact with the person running the program, here's what they said about this:
"I think once you have them they will work forever (or thereabouts) unless it's a game that's using servers that will be shut down."
"Actually one slight correction: it's actually up to the devs whether they want the game playable after the week is over, so some may choose to "turn them off" afterwards."
"The devs will be able to re-publish some of the demos to our normal demo channel after that week, so some may be available later. Probably mostly just demos for games that are pretty close to launch, though."
@FraserG Ah, good to know. Thanks for the update. Guess I'll keep an eye on them after all, then...
