You might remember that back in May, we learned of a new, unofficial project called Insignia that would reportedly allow original Xbox owners to play games online without any modifications or patches to software.
Since then, the team behind the project has posted a couple of videos to YouTube showing games actually working via the service, and they appear to be running very well indeed! You can get a look at Unreal Championship above, which shows two developers playing online with two bots, and MechAssault below, which again features the same two developers (one in the UK, one in the US).
We still don't have a date of when players will be invited into the service yet, although the team has previously mentioned that a private beta will follow when testers are required. We'll let you know when we learn more!
Are you keeping an eye on the Insignia project? Let us know what you think of it below.

Great!!!! Hope MS can make something like this but official!
I cannot wait to see more. I keep checking the reddit thread daily to hear more
This is pretty awesome. The OG Xbox had a lot of fun online games.
This reminds me of XBConnect in a way. Anyone remember using that to play Halo 1 online on Xbox? Supported any LAN games too.
@Menchi
I never played XBConnect. In fact, I don’t even remember it. I’m getting old. My memory isn’t what it used to be. 😂
But I thought the OG Xbox I like community was great. Then after the 360 became the most popular console (when Sony told everyone to “get a 2nd job” to buy the PS3), the online community went way downhill with a bunch of prepubescent kids yelling insults on mic.
It would be great to play some OG Xbox games online with some older Xbox fans again. 👍🏻
@KelticDevil Party chat really killed online gaming a lot. The OG Xbox days and even early 360 days had everyone talking in games.
Did they stop giving headsets with 360/Xbox One eventually? I haven't heard a person talk on Xbox in the wild in nearly a decade at this point.
@Menchi
Yea they stopped giving away those cheap & crappy headsets. Microsoft does sell actually gaming headphones that have pretty good sound for $60. And those ones come with a microphone on them. The build quality on them is rather weak, however.
@Menchi yes I loved xbc those were some of the best days for playing halo 2 such great times
I hope they can get it off the ground Kai links ok but it’s so laggy it’s not worth playing sometimes
@Menchi Can I ask what your gamertag on xbc was
