It's been just over ten years since the Xbox Live servers for the original Xbox were shut down, but a new replacement for the service is currently in private development. It's called Insignia, and will reportedly allow original Xbox owners to play games online without any modifications or patches to software.
As part of the announcement, the team behind Insignia posted a short video showing a successful sign-up to the Xbox Live style server, which you can see above. It says the service has been in private development since late last year, and is hoping to have games working by Autumn 2020.
None of this is officially supported by Microsoft of course, but it's certainly an exciting development for old-school Xbox fans. The Insignia team says the service isn't quite ready yet, although a private beta will follow when testers are required. We'll be keeping a close eye on this one!
What are your thoughts on Insignia so far? Interested in trying it out? Let us know in the comments.

Wow, this is very cool!
Seeing that green dashboard takes me back, good times
Please, Microsoft do the same thing officially for OG Xbox BC games, pleeeeaaassse
I'll he keeping my eye one this for sure. Microsoft either need to bring this feature back themselves or fans will do it. Either way, I'm good with this. I literally bought my OG xbox a month after the shutdown and didn't get to go online with it
If a private company can accomplish this then I see absolutely no reason why a megacorporation with pockets as deep as Microsoft's can't implement it into their next console. They promised full backward compatibility for EVERY game from EVERY generation; they've yet to fully deliver on that promise, especially with regard to original Xbox titles. We're watching and waiting, Microsoft.
@AtlanteanMan
Um.....they did give us backwards compatibility on OG Xbox & 360 games. And for free, no less.
They never said it would be for every single game from both gigantic catalogs.
@KelticDevil Actually they did promise that very thing when they announced the BC program. Free or not, it's a major feature for many gamers (myself included) and hopefully Microsoft will pick the program back up and continue to add more titles after Series X launches.
@AtlanteanMan
You have proof that they said every single game from the 360 & OG Xbox would be backwards compatible at some point? Because, quite frankly, you are incorrect & full of it.
And they can’t make a lot of games backwards compatible because of the many licensing issues involved, so that doesn’t even make any sense.
I, for one, am very happy with what they have done with the backwards compatibility program up to this point. I use it all the time. I am using it right now while playing Fable Anniversary.
If you are feeling shortchanged, maybe you should look at what the competitors are doing & maybe you’ll appreciate what they have already done more.
@KelticDevil,
I apologize if I came across as self-entitled; it wasn't my intention. It's just that there are still a bunch of games I played a ton of, especially on Original Xbox, which weren't added to the BC list before Microsoft's attention moved to Series X. Some examples: TimeSplitters 2 and TS: Future Perfect, Daisenryaku: Modern Military Tactics, Namco Museum 50th Anniversary, Out Run 2006: Coast2Coast.
I looked up the three original announcements (E3 2015, E3 2017, E3 2019). This is a direct quote from Dualshockers following the 2019 E3: "You'll be able to play every Xbox game on your brand new Scarlett console next year." Even back in 2015/17, I distinctly remember hearing either Phil Spencer or another MS rep state that their intention was to make the entire catalog from every generation backwards-compatible.
Maybe I misheard/misread; it's certainly a possibility. And I realize your point regarding licensed titles, but in any case, I would love to see the program continue to expand on Series X so we can hopefully be able to play the aforementioned games on current hardware. No harm in that, is there?
@AtlanteanMan
No worries, man. I would also like to see them continue this expansion to backwards compatibility & not just stop with XSX.
In my opinion, if they keep doing what they have already been doing (adding 360 & OG Xbox titles), during the next generation....then 👍🏻. They may not be done yet.
So do I expect them to add every single Xbox game ever? Hell no. But they need to not forget about those two generations going forward. I do agree with that.
