Starting Tomorrow, Need for Speed Heat Will Be The First EA Title To Offer Cross-Play

General Manager of Criterion Games Matt Webster has posted a new update on the official Need for Speed website regarding the future of Need for Speed Heat. While confirming that the June 9 update for the game will be its last, Webster also revealed that cross-play is being added for multiple platforms.

Starting tomorrow, players will be prompted with the option to activate cross-play functionality across Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC, making this the first EA title to offer the feature. You'll also be able to use proximity chat to talk to other players in-game, as well as create parties with your EA Friends.

"At Criterion, we've always believed that games are better with friends. We don’t want your platform of choice to be a barrier for that experience. So we're thrilled to let you all know that on June 9, Need for Speed Heat will be the first EA title to offer cross-play, meaning that players – regardless of their platform – can jump into Palm City together as one, united community."

Additionally, it was revealed that Need for Speed Heat will soon be entering the EA Access Vault on Xbox One. This means that if you're a subscriber to the service, you'll be able to play the full version of Need for Speed Heat at no extra charge beginning June 16, cross-play and all.

As for the future of the series, Webster revealed that Criterion Games was excited to be "back in the driver's seat," having previously worked on franchise entries Most Wanted and Hot Pursuit. The company says it has "a terrific foundation to create the most expressive, most socially connected, action-packed game yet for Need for Speed fans and beyond."
