Towards the end of EA Play - the company's chief studios officer Laura Miele spoke about the future and what's ahead. She explained how all of EA's studios were creating new stories, experiences, and gameplay - all enabled by new console technology.
One of these, as you might have guessed, is the next-generation Need for Speed title, which has already been teased by Matt Webster of Criterion Games. Now, we've got our first look of the "work in progress" game - we even got to see a new load screen, of sorts:
Here's what Miele had to say about Criterion Games and the next Need for Speed:
Criterion is known for how their games feel, from superior physics to nuanced details of gameplay - this team hand curates the moment to moment experience.
And with the new consoles this year, there will be a seamless immersion, which will get you into the race in a matter of seconds.
Are you as excited as we are for the future of the Need for Speed series under Criterion Games? Tell us down below.

Yeah, I can't wait - bring on next-gen!
I haven’t played a Need for Speed since the 360 but just noticed NFS Heat has been added to the EA Access Vault. Going to give it a go, hopefully it’ll get me back into the NFS series.
Criterion’s need for speed was the best one in my opinion so I’ll look forward to this
@WesEds In terms of the driving mechanics and physics - I completely agree with you. One issue a lot of the community had with the game was the lack of customisation/modding. Hopefully, Criterion can improve on that in its next game.
@Liam_Doolan now you mention it I never really noticed that there was a lack of customisation, probably because I rarely mod or customise cars in games, maybe change colour but that’s about it.
I see what you mean though because NFS did make that a big thing in previous games.
Need For Speed was arguably at its best with Criterion behind the wheel (pun intended). Hot Pursuit was brilliant, and I don't think any arcade racer since has managed to top it, not even Criterion's Most Wanted follow-up. I'd still like both to be back compat, though.
Of course, the Criterion from 2010 is a lot different to the Criterion of today. I still have faith they can deliver.
@Arugula Criterion didn't make Heat, they worked on the updates/patches but didnt design the main game.
I haven't played a NFS game in a very long time. I made a slight attempt at getting into one during the sales that Xbox has, but i could never figure out which one to purchase. Maybe I'll just start with Heat. The visuals shown in the pictures as "work in progress" look absolutely ridiculous though! I mean that in a good way. I don't even want to believe that is what the next NFS will actually end up looking like because I don't want to be let down when it's actually released.
