As part of Xbox Head Phil Spencer's interview with IGN on the company's podcast yesterday, he talked about the potential price of the Xbox Series X. While Spencer refrained from giving a specific figure for now, he noted he "feels good" about the price target in mind.
"You have to set a price target at the beginning for yourselves. And then you kind of roll in as you see the competition come in and start to go to market planning. I feel good about the price that we're going to be able to get to. I feel good about the price and the performance capabilities that we have with Series X. I feel incredibly strong about the overall package."
Additionally, Spencer talked about the desire to "stay agile" with pricing and ensure the brand has a "good plan going into launch." As well as highlighting how "very solid" he feels about the plan for Xbox Series X, he indicated that the success of Xbox Series X would be about more than just a figure:
"I don't think it's just about price - you've got to obviously be a competitive price, you've got to have an offering that meets the needs of the customers that you want, and in many cases exceeds the needs of what they expected... I feel good about that."
We'll be sharing more of what Spencer had to say in the interview throughout the day here at Pure Xbox. Let us know what you think of Spencer's comments down below.

@KratosMD
400 and its a no brainer to buy for me =)
I really think they'll either have a price lower than what we are expecting or they will let Sony go first and then beat what Sony announces
In my opinion, as long as they match Sony....they win. Not win the generation, but win the price battle. XSX is significantly more powerful than the PS5 and they screwed up this generation. They can’t afford to be $100 more than the PS5.
It’s simple. They got the power now. Now match the price & make good 1st party games & they are gold. You have to take advantage of the positive press they have had while Sony sits around & does.....well, not sure what they are doing.
This all sounds very promising indeed!
I don't expect a price point lower than £499 to be fair, and I don't really mind. Haven't made my mind up though whether I'm sticking with playstation or go back to xbox, but the price factor won't be that important to me. After all, you're stuck with it for at least five years or so.
I’m expecting $499, anything lower would be amazing.
@KelticDevil I agree. I think that they should match PS5 price even if it's $€400 and wait for the software and subscriptions to make up for hardware benefits loss.
@BlueOcean
Sony has never been one to take a big loss on each console sold & with so many PS4’s out there, they really don’t have to. And that SSD drive we keep hearing about (🙄) can’t be cheap either. It’ll be interesting to see what price Sony launches at.
It’s like the two companies are playing chicken right now on the pricing thing.
@KelticDevil Yep, I can't wait to see the price of both. We already know that Series X is more powerful and balanced but PS5 uses very similar technology and has an expensive (and pointless according to possible bottlenecks reported by Digital Foundry) SSD.
A year ago I would have believed Series X to be 100 dollars more expensive than PS5 (500 versus 400) but not anymore. Just 50 dollars more expensive would be a bit silly so I would match the price if I was Microsoft.
The problem is who reveals price first and who responds? Sony said that they'd adjust the price of PS5 depending on competing platforms and Spencer seems to know the price of Series X already so Sony could be waiting and undercut Series X at the last minute. They haven't even shown the console! For instance, Microsoft says 500 this summer and Sony says 400. Or Microsoft says 450 and Sony says 400. Or will they both say 500 or 400?
@BlueOcean
If I am Microsoft, I sit back & wait. Sony has to reveal the PS5 at some point. Sony has already looked very timid & worried, in my opinion. And with so many PS4 consoles out in the wild, it has to make you wonder why?
Maybe because Sony knows that it has to launch at $500 to make any $, and Microsoft can match the $500 while also having a much more powerful console. Sony would even look bad & they are trying to delay the inevitable by dragging out the true reveal of the console.
Yep, Sony seems to be a bit unsure about what to do or at the very least they are waiting to see what Microsoft does because they waited until Microsoft revealed specifications to announce theirs. 500 as a price tag for both consoles is likely but Series X is more powerful and it has been designed by the brilliant engineers that designed Xbox One X. If X and Pro are anything to go by, Series X has been carefully designed and customised and PS5 is the new Pro, perfectly serviceable but with potential heat and/or fan noise issues and poorer graphical capabilities.
