In a recent interview with Video Games Chronicle, Halo co-creator Marcus Lehto commented on the Xbox Series X and PS5, discussing the potential of high-speed SSD tech and sharing his excitement about how that technology will make a "huge difference" for games going forward.
Lehto, whose V1 Interactive studio is currently working on upcoming FPS Disintegration, suggested that because of those SSDs, next-gen systems will provide a more seamless and fluid experience:
"It will make a huge difference. It will open up the door for more expansive content that can stream a lot faster. Players won’t be waiting on load screens and we won’t have to hide loading behind cinematics and that kind of thing."
The Halo co-creator also went on to admit that creating games for the Xbox One and PS4 is proving difficult seven years on, describing them as "like developing for machinery in the stone age." However, he mentioned that work on next-gen systems for Disintegration hasn't been looked at thoroughly yet, but will be explored in the future.
How big of a difference do you think the Xbox Series X and PS5 SSDs will make? Let us know below.

Most of what I hear is around loading and certain elements of game design - those 'corridors/elevators' between areas for example will no longer be necessary for example. Not that I have seen these as 'particularly' annoying as you do get some 'calm' before a storm and loading times are much better these days - but not going to complain if these things are improved.
Hiding loading behind cut scenes are not always bad either as it drives the story forward and can set the scene for the next area. Obviously if its every few minutes or so, it can break up the flow but we will see if it makes a big difference in the long run and what Devs can achieve.
It may take a few years to see it utilised in a significant way as a lot of games will no doubt be built with the ability to scale down to hardware without high bandwidth SSD's connected in a way to actually take advantage. The main difference is likely to be faster loading with less pop-in of textures/assets etc. A LOT of big open worlds have no loading now - once you are in the world and don't use Fast Travel - and with long views with a LOT of assets/textures.
The headline for this article is quite different on pushsquare for some reason 😅 "Halo Co-Creator Hyped About PS5's Super-Fast SSD Technology"
The proof will be in the pudding. They can hype it as much as they want, and it's quite exciting to hear going into next gen, but we'll have to see how it turns out in practice.
