Self-described writer, videogame lover and standup comedian Christian Spicer took to Twitter the other day to poll users on their thoughts regarding Xbox Series X and PS5. He questioned which of the two systems people would choose if they "could only pick one", and received over 30k votes for his trouble.
You can see the tweet and final results below, in which Xbox Series X (somewhat narrowly) overcame the PS5. As he mentions, most of the comments seemed to focus on Xbox Game Pass and backwards compatibility in favour of Xbox Series X, while PS5 fans noted exclusives as a key reason to stick with Sony.

It's not worth reading into this too much, but even so, 30k is a worthy sample size. We'll likely see many more reveals from both companies over the next few months, but for now, it's nice to see Xbox Game Pass and backwards compatibility getting some love from the wider gaming community.
How seriously are you taking this poll? Let us know what you think about it in the comments.

It is kind of remarkable to see the backpedaling that a lot of PlayStation fans are doing after the PS5 presentation last week. My mind is already made up; I'm getting a Series X at launch, but that's mostly for Halo Infinite. At the end of the day, it all comes down to games and performance. Xbox has a really good chance this generation, with all of the studios they've acquired. And it's indisputable that Series X is more powerful. We'll see, man.
“And it's indisputable that Series X is more powerful.”
A lot of game developers seem to think differently. Personally, I’m just going to wait until after these things release and let digital foundry do their voodoo and then, after the actual scientific results are in, take stock and make a decision.
You know it really comes down to launch titles...
It does come down to games, but most third-party games will run a bit better on SeX and we still don't know what games those XGS are working on. It IS nice to see Xbox getting some love, that's for sure. 🙌
@NorrinRadd The series X is more 'powerful' but that doesn't mean that Devs can get what they want from it as easily. The Series X has a faster CPU - even in SMT mode - albeit slight. Its GPU has significantly more cores and more shaders - nearly 50% more too but being slightly slower, doesn't have the same 'gap' in raw computation power (Tflops). Even its RAM - at least 10GB all for games - is faster too and even the 3.5GB if the slower RAM is the same speed as the XB1X's RAM, which is 50% than that in the PS4 Pro.
Chances are, a game will hit CPU or GPU bottlenecks on the PS5 first - but with things like Dynamic Resolution scaling for example, that may not be such an issue. Some tasks will be quicker on PS5 but overall, its still a weaker system - but whether its more efficient or easier for devs to get the most out of it, that's a different matter.
@BAMozzy
We just don’t know yet how the developers are going to make use of all of these new technologies/systems. Remember also that the Cell processor was so much more powerful than what was in the 360, and how did that turn out as far as a difference in games?
@TheNewButler well they kind of already have... I mean HZD2 is horribly kept secret. No, it’s not “officially” announced but it’s coming.
Don’t get me wrong I’m in the Xbox ecosystem but My friends are a different story.
Microsoft have Halo at launch, but that will be big. They will also have a lot of stuff coming down the pipe later on. With gamepass, it certainly makes it the cheaper system, just because you get stuff from Xbox game studios day 1.
I think it will depend on what Sony have in their first year. Sony do historically let 3rd parties have the light at first, even now they have 2 games left for Ps4
I'm all in for the Series X, I've just never been a big PS person. Nothing has really made me change my mind, I doubt anything will.
Sorry with over 140 million consoles sold between the current PS and XBOX so potentially at least that many next gen console sales a sample size of 30k is very small and not really a proper indicator of how people really feel
don't get me wrong it might be that the result is still the same but i think a bigger pool is needed
Xbox has many ways of seducing players now: better controller, better online services, better digital rights, better subscriptions and better hardware. People have been saying that they "lost" this generation because of games but they "lost" because of Don Mattrick. Just remember when Sony admitted that PS4 was selling far more than they expected "without games" after its first year.
Games are more important now than when those two consoles launched and both Sony and Microsoft know it. I think that Sony's games are usually overrated and I'm curious about what the new Xbox Game Studios have been working on because it always seemed like Xbox One was missing something. Something like Fable, Banjo-Kazooie, etc. This time it looks like Xbox will get far more first-party games and even more third-party support. In any case, Series X is like the final result of a whole generation of making wrongs right.
Even if the Xbox wasn't more powerful than the PS4 I would still get it because I love being able to keep my games and continue to play them. So I'm definitely picking up an XboxSX sometime in the future.
But, while the survey is pretty fun to comment on, I hope this site doesn't become an Xbox vs PS4 fan site. Pushsquare can become so obsessed with proving how much better Playstation is that some of the writers (ok, mostly just one) comes across as the worst kind of fanboi. I don't like visiting the site even though I like a lot of Playstation stuff because I can't stand guys like that. Like seriously, I don't understand why for some guys everything has to be an ego thing.
I hope Pure Xbox doesn't become that, and sticks to being a site for Xbox news and excitement without feeling like it has to prove something to Nintendolife or Pushsquare fanbois.
@ThePrettySenshi yeah it has been flying it's flag a bit lately, there are certain articles i just don't read anymore because i know it's either going to be a bit of a fanboy rant, a fluff piece or the comments are full of fanboy arguments
i just wanna talk about games and things about gaming
@NorrinRadd
“A lot of developers seem to think differently.”
Proof?
@BlueOcean
I completely agree with everything you said.
@NorrinRadd and that was the power of marketing. The PS3 Cell CPU wasn't radically different from the Xenon CPU in the 360 - it had a few more specialisations like its streaming floating point work which is done on its seven DSP processors, but it only had 1 core for general CPU workload - meaning the 360 had more 'general' CPU performance. It also had a slightly more powerful GPU and much higher bandwidth unified RAM (more than 5x what the PS3's memory bandwidth was) so it was the more powerful system in many ways. The PS3 had Blurays of course but the design and its limitations made it very difficult for devs to get parity with the 360 in multi-platform games. If you are building a game from the ground up, you design it around those limitations - much like MS games hit 1080/30 or even 1080/60 on XB1, exceeding the standard that 'similar' multi-platform releases could achieve on the same hardware.
If you know draw distance is causing slowdown in an area, its easy to change that area if its just on one console. Its more difficult to change a Multiplatform game when its supposed to be the same on ALL platforms regardless of spec. So instead of changing the environment to suit the GPU's capability, they reduce the workload by reducing the resolution and/or graphical settings, reduce frame rates to give the GPU more time to process and render that frame etc...
@TheNewButler ooo you might worry about which camp I’m in later lol just kidding.
Honestly I meant that specs weren’t enough to make me change my mind; I’m getting an XSX. And I suspect a lot of those who answered the poll are the same. It’s people on the fence. They tend look at games only.
There’s a lot to like about the Series X.
MS has at least revealed the look of the console (unlike their competitor) and it’s unusual & attractive tower design. Actually showing people your product is a big advantage right there. I find it very appealing and it has been designed with thermal performance in mind. Xbox is in a much stronger position this time around with good leadership in Phil Spencer. Phil has been making all the right moves since taking over for the boob that was Don Mattrick.
As far as games go, well I guess I’m an outlier in that I’ve enjoyed MS first party games more than most of my fellow gamers this gen, but I can understand why it’s been a let down. I think MS cut the Xbox division off early in the gen until the gaming market settled and, really didn’t open the purse strings again until Sony and Nintendo proved that the console market was still viable in 2017. 2013 was a weird time for gaming with mobile gaming exploding and Nintendo going off the deep end and failing miserably. Xbox found fools gold with Kinect 1.0 which skewed their thinking. Add in out of touch leadership and it was a recipe for a disaster they’ve spent 6 years trying to clean up. They’ve stuck it out and I’m very hopeful we’ll see a much different Xbox first party line up next gen.
Im going to try to get a Series X on day one, but I might have to wait a few months. I’ll definitely be getting one!
It's not surprise really. Sony has been shooting itself in the foot since late 2018 with a lot of nonsensical decisions.
