Cross-Platform Play Between Xbox One and PC Could Become a Reality

One step closer

When it comes to multiplayer gaming, cross-platform play between consoles and platforms has always been something gamers have been hoping for. The idea of playing Call of Duty on your Xbox 360 against friends who own a PS3 is becoming less and less of a possibility, even as we enter a new console generation.

Things may be looking up though, at least when talking about cross play between Xbox One and PC. During an interview with Ausgamers, Microsoft vice president, Phil Spencer believes that because of the connected ecosystems between both platforms, cross-platform play actually "makes sense."

He went on to elaborate:

"This connected ecosystem across all the different devices is definitely where I think the future of gaming is going," Spencer said. "You don’t have to do it as a developer, but you have the capability and I think a system like Xbox Live across all those screens where you know who someone is and who their friends are, what their Achievements are, and their progression is really critical to that."

Microsoft did experiment with cross-platform play in 2007 with Shadowrun but ultimately didn't gain enough traction or success. This hasn't stopped them from attempting again, and since the Xbox One was designed with PC architecture in mind, it's completely possible we'll see both X1 and PC titles offering the ability to play with others on different platforms.

It's still a long way from seeing cross play between consoles, but it is a move in the proper direction.

Wish this would be the case for a game like BF4. Many of my friends will play on PC while I go the console route with a handful of other friends.
