Xbox 360 Rules Hardware Sales in North America

Posted by Ken Barnes

28 months and counting.

The NPD US monthly hardware and software sales charts were released earlier today, and Microsoft has reason to celebrate.

For the 28th month in a row, the Xbox 360 is the best selling console in the States, having shifted 130,000 units in April, giving it a 42 percent share of current-generation console sales. In April alone, the spend on hardware, software, and accessories at retail for the platform broke the $200 million mark, with a final total of $208 million - more than any of the other currently available systems by some way.

No platform-exclusive titles managed to reach the top 10 in the software sales chart, although NBA 2k13, Dead Island: Riptide, BioShock Infinite, Defiance, Injustice: Gods Among Us, and Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 all made appearances.

It all bodes well for Microsoft's entry into the next generation, which will be revealed on Tuesday. We'll be liveblogging the scene, and you can find out times for the presentation in your area, here.

It's gotta be getting close to reaching the Wii's sales to date numbers over here, which is something I don't think many would've predicted even as late as 2010. Granted the 360 has been on the market longer but still impressive, especially considering original Xbox sales weren't exactly the greatest ever.
