Mother Nature Uses Kinect to Change the World

Posted by James Newton

Well, sort of

We've seen a lot of wish-fulfilment Kinect demos, from lightsabers to invisibility, but the sensor can be used for more conscionable activities too, as Mother Nature proves.

A PC game using Kinect for gesture recognition, Mother Nature puts you in the hemp sandals of the deity herself, letting you cultivate life on Earth from the smallest seed upwards. The official description puts it more neatly:

Mother Nature is a game that brings the fundamental components of nature into one place and uses the players' own body to make the verbs of nature—sprout, fall, grow, hunt, blow, eat, dodge, repel, bloom– into the tools of play.

Produced through the University of Southern California’s Advanced Game Project and shown off at the "Games for Change" festival last week, here's the trailer below to provide a nice counterpoint to the ever-burgeoning hunger for hardcore Kinect games.

It's hardly Ghost Recon is it? Still, I like the idea of a more relaxing Kinect experience :)
