I recently got an xbox one. I never had one before and I'm just setting it up. I didn't get any controllers with it so i bought a cheap third party one on Amazon. I noticed while playing a message popped on my screen about an unauthorized device connected which i assume is my controller. Then i read this crap about the device will be blocked on a certain date.

So WTF is this now? Since when did game companies start banning controllers? Is this for real? I can't even buy generic controllers anymore?

The controller i have says Xone on the back and has a house symbol for the home button instead of the official xbox logo. I saw some discussions about it on another forum and a guy on there said his controller still worked even after the supposed date it would be blocked had been reached.

What a crock of crap. Why even continue to produce third party xbox controllers if they are gonna get blocked? I call BS.

@Truegamer79 might be worth trying yours after the cut off date, see if it still works. If it doesn’t, I would personally avoid unlicensed controllers just in case it happens again.

Yep. That's my plan from now on. I think i found a good replacement on Amazon if it comes to that. Wish I'd known of that sooner.

@Truegamer79 I meant to say in my last message, but the type of controller you have described quite possibly wouldn’t work on a Titan or Brook in my experience, so probably ignore that idea!

It is a shame, I’m not 100% sure why they have done this, but I guess they must have their reasons.

Haha, yeah, it really sucks. And I don't buy Xbox's explanation about it being for stopping cheating because both PowerA and PDP have controllers with rapid fire options and/or customizable back buttons and they're licensed and can be used after the 3rd party block.

I can think of two possible explanations why. One is that they're worried that some non-licensed controllers may upload some malware or mess with the Xbox in a way that would harm the console or user.
The second is that they don't get any money from 3rd party controllers unless they can make them pay a license fee.

Personally, I think the money is the real answer because if it was to protect us they would mention it, and if it was to stop cheating they wouldn't have their own customizable pro controller.

@Utena-mobile I think its likely a bit of both - as in they don't want third party controllers that have not been licenced or verified on their Hardware - whether they allow for cheating exploits (like rapid fire for example) or not. Their 'Pro' controller doesn't allow for cheating - paddles aren't there to enable Rapid Fire- they act as an alternative 'button' press so don't act any differently from a Standard controller.

Most, if not all games these days have Customisable options. You may not like the 'default' layout so can customise the layout. Its no different from assigning 'Jump' (normally 'A' in games), to a Paddle on a Pro controller or switching it to 'B' if you prefer. The point is that pressing a Paddle to jump is no different from pressing A or reassigning it to any other button (or Key if you play K&M). Its not 'cheating' like using a Rapid Fire Mod controller. Pressing a Paddle to jump is no different than pressing 'A' to jump.

Scuf also make Licensed Xbox Controllers as a 3rd Party option.

Cheating is doing something the Game wasn't built or designed to do - like making Semi-auto guns 'rapid-fire' with a single trigger pull for example but being able to jump by pressing a different button/paddle is not...

A pessimist is just an optimist with experience!

Why can't life be like gaming? Why can't I restart from an earlier checkpoint??

Feel free to add me but please send a message so I know where you know me from...

@BAMozzy Thats a good point. I forgot that there are options to change the entire key bindings in the settings for accessibility for disabled people but that doesn't stop anyone from also taking advantage of it.
And now that you mention it, on Fortnite pretty much everyone turns on the noise visualizer. lol.
