Yesterday, we covered some of the Xbox layoffs from this week and how developers such as The Coalition and World's Edge were involved, and now World's Edge in particular has been getting a lot of chatter online today.
This is mainly because of a suggestion that a game (or at least a "project") has been cancelled at the studio following its shift to Activision. A former Senior Software Engineer at the studio specifically referred to this in their departure note:
"Today our studio was reorganized to be under the Activision umbrella. As part of that reorg, our next project was cancelled and a large chunk of our studio was laid off. I was part of that layoff."
World's Edge, if you don't know, has been involved in developing Age of Empires and Age of Mythology games over the past few years, and our sister site Push Square has speculated that Age of Empires 5 could be the cancelled project.
Xbox didn't mention anything at all about cancelled games in their statement the other day though, so we're assuming the project was in its infancy. There's also a chance it could have been more content for one of the other Age of Empires games, but ultimately we may never get the full details.
Despite a suggestion that around half the team were let go, former studio creative director Adam Isgreen mentioned that they had "great plans for what's next", and maybe Microsoft doesn't want to pull the plug on those plans entirely.
"MS facilitated me visiting places I would not have likely visited and gave me the opportunity to interact with amazing developers from all around the world. For that, I'm very grateful. "
"I am of course disappointed that this is the way the time with World's Edge and Age ends for myself and many of my talented teammates that were also impacted - we had some great plans for what's next - and I hope the team that remains can rise to the occasion down the line."
In any case, the future of World's Edge will be under Activision now, and we'll have to wait to see what comes of it.
