Fortnite Loses Two Game Modes, But 'Save The World' Goes Free On Xbox & Beyond

It's been a busy week for Fortnite on Xbox and beyond! It's lost two games (or modes if you want to call them that), but also brought back its original incarnation — Save The World — as a free-to-play game across multiple platforms.

Let's start with Save The World. If you remember, Fortnite originally started out as a PvE game back in 2017 in which you'd build bases and attempt to defend against constant waves of monsters. This was known as Fortnite: Save The World, and it was a paid experience unlike the free-to-play Battle Royale mode that arrived later on.

Well, this has now returned for free, so you can go and check it out on Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, PC, Xbox Cloud Gaming and various other non-Xbox platforms without having to pay a thing. Pretty neat!

In more general Fortnite news, as we mentioned in our Xbox delisting roundup for April and May, both Fortnite Ballistic and Fortnite Festival Battle Stage were removed permanently on the 16th. These games / game modes will no longer be playable via the main Fortnite app on Xbox, although Fortnite Festival "Main Stage" and "Jam Stage" do still exist.

And speaking of Fortnite Festival, both Pro Vocals and Pro Drums are now supported going forward, meaning that if you've got a microphone and/or a Rock Band 4 drum kit for Xbox One, these features will be accessible to you. The folks over at CRKD have already confirmed they'll be releasing a drum kit controller for Xbox in 2026 too.

Let's get back to Fortnite: Save The World though — here's a bit more about what you can expect:

"Discover the epic PvE action-building co-op campaign. Take on the monster hordes either solo or with up to three friends as you explore a vast, destructible world, with dynamically created maps where no two games are ever the same. The fight is on. Gather your squad, find your favorite gear, and Save the World."
