2K's publishing arm Private Division has announced that it's working on a new The Lord of the Rings game, in partnership with the team behind the film trilogy. Wētā Workshop's new gaming division will lead the project, which is expected to release in 2K's 2024 fiscal year.

Here's what Wētā Workshop's Head of Interactive had to say about the title:

It’s a privilege to create a new game set in Middle-earth, especially one that’s so different from what fans have played previously [...] As fans ourselves, we’re excited for gamers to explore Middle-earth in a way they never have before, and introduce new fans to the magic of The Lord of the Rings.

There's not much else to go on at present, especially with the game being so far away from launch. Still, it seems the team is opting to go in a different direction for the franchise, likely compared to WB's recent Middle-earth games.

We don't know of any platforms for this one yet either, although an Xbox release should be on the cards. With a 2023-24 release window, we'd hope it's next-gen only, on Xbox Series X and S.

Looking forward to more LOTR games? Let us know what you'd like to see!
