Xbox has announced that Bethesda's 2005 shooter, Quake 4, is coming to Xbox storefronts on PC. Things are kicking off with an initial preview program, which is currently open to Xbox Insiders on the platform.
To access the preview, you'll have to sign up via the Xbox Insider Hub on Windows PC. It seems like a pretty open preview with no mentions of limited slots or anything of the sort. If you're interested and haven't used the Insider Hub before, here's how to access the Quake 4 preview:
- Sign in on Windows PC and launch the Xbox Insider Hub (or grab it from the Store if you don't have the app)
- Navigate to Previews, Quake 4
- Select Join
- Wait for the registration attempt to process and you'll be able to install the Quake 4 preview.
Quake 4 is already out on PC via Steam and GOG, but the game's migration to Xbox on PC should be good news for Game Pass users. As Bethesda — who publishes Quake — is now an Xbox-owned studio, the game should come to PC Game Pass once the preview program has run its course.
Down the line, it'd be nice to see Quake 4 come to Game Pass for console as well. Recently, Bethesda re-released the original Quake on consoles, and it immediately became a part of the Xbox Game Pass library.
Happy to see Quake 4 hopefully coming to PC Game Pass? Tell us down in the comments.

That's cool, but Microsoft/Bethesda should really port Quake III Arena to Xbox consoles. They could even use the Dreamcast port as a source, if it makes things easier.
@101Force I don't get why they didn't bring both Quake and Quake 2 to Xbox and PC, rather than releasing one for PC and one for Xbox. Quale III Arena was a blast on the Dreamcast. I lost so many hours to it lol. That classic 1p a minute didn't sound like much when I was a kid, but man... I'll never forget the look on my mum's face when the bill came in :/ I might load up the BC 360 version of Quake 3A and give it a blast this weekend.
Speaking of classics, I'd also love to see Unreal Tournament come back.
As for Q4, I never really got on with it. It just didn't quite feel like Quake to me...
I’d also love Quake2 & Quake3Arena on Xbox! Quake Arena Arcade was one of the last games to get BC support, but don’t know how different it is to Q3A.
@Kaloudz totally agree re the Unreal Tournament series - I have all the XB BC versions of the game (UT3 & Unreal Championship2), but would love the original UT99, as well as the other versions, especially UT2004, which was my favourite of the UT series. Will definitely be firing up UT2004 on my Steamdeck, if I ever get one! 😺
I'd love to see this on console. I was gutted when it wasn't made available via backwards compatibility. The scene on the conveyor belt still haunts me.
@gdog989 Ohh see I couldn't get on with UT3. I just got my butt whooped far too much. I forget which one was on the Dreamcast (I think it was UT99 or UT2004) but I LOVED that one. The maps on that game were just epic. That one with the two towers on either side of that cave, with a long winding pathway leading to each. Gosh, sniper heaven or what!! Is that a dead series these days? No upcoming titles?
As for Quake Arena Arcade, I played it a small while back on the Xbox One and I think it's just Q3A in all but name. I couldn't see any differences to the original, bar maybe some UI and menu changes. Could be wrong though.
I seem to remeber Q4 being a launch title on the 360...and it was widely regarded as being....well...complete pants.
@Kaloudz The one on Dreamcast was UT99, that was the original Unreal Tournament, which got me into arena shooters & totally agree that it’s a classic game! IIRC, the map you’re talking about is a CTF one - it might be Lava Giant, but UT99 had so many great maps. My favourite was Facing Worlds 🚀
Re upcoming titles: There is a new one on PC that hasn’t been officially released, that’s sposed to be good, but I’ve never played it. Also afaik the Unreal devs only work on Fortnite now, which is a shame, because UT is soo much better. You never know tho, with so many classic games coming back like Doom, Quake, System Shock, etc, maybe arena shooters can too! 😺
@101Force it’s been on Xbox consoles for years. It was released on Xbox Live Arcade on the 360 I think, and is backwards compatible with the One and Series consoles.
The Quake 2 expansion packs are not currently available on Xbox Store either, despite being on Steam and GoG.
I have been waiting patiently for the day I can scrape it out of the plastic binder sleeve it's been in for the past 15 years and give it a go.
Honestly, it's not a great game. But it's not that bad, either. Definitely worth booting up into the easiest difficulty and blasting through in a sitting or two.
@ChopperCampbell I've just checked says it's only playable on pc
@Would_you_kindly @101Force I’ve just checked and I was wrong. It’s actually Quake Arena Arcade that’s on console, not Quake III Arena. Sorry for the misinformation.
@ChopperCampbell Is it not the same thing? I've played it and aside from a few changes to the layout of the menus, it's the same game, is it not?
@gdog989 That's the one and only!! I love that map. Oh hell!! How could I forget about facing worlds! That's the small one with two forts and a single path to each, is it not? The one that hovers just above the Earth? That's a beautiful map! Don't ya just love it when you get that perfect shot and you see your enemy just explode into a fountain of blood. There's nothing like it!
Ugh, Fortnite. I don't suspect they see the point in making a fully fledged UT game, given how easy it is to make money on free to play games. Still, I'd love some ports or remasters. I miss the simplicity of the old shooters :/
This needs to be on Xbox too!!!
just 2 words: Quake Champions.
Yes! Maybe Hexen, too. I would also like to see Nox ported to Xbox.
@Kaloudz Yes, Facing Worlds is the 1 where you’re on an asteroid with the Earth rotating around it! Back in the day I loved getting headshots by sniping, but these days I prefer storming the fort with the Translocater. This map is also in UT3, but I prefer how it looks in the original.
Totally agree re simplicity of old shooters. I recently completed Quake1 including all the new/extra content & it was a blast! Also, finished Dusk, which is a mixture of Blood, Doom64 & Quake, & was v.kool too, but it’s only on PC+Switch atm.
These types of shooters are really fun, but the atmosphere of Unreal Tournament is unique & timeless! 🚀
hopefully quake 4 will be backward compatible with xbox series
@gdog989 See this just makes me want to dig out the Dreamcast and play 🤣🤣 I loaded up Q3 Arena on the Xbox Series S last night and had a few blasts. I'm so crap these days lol
