If there's one thing we've found really difficult over the years, it's keeping up with the Fortnite pros who have become masters at building elaborate structures in a matter of seconds. Fortunately, Epic Games has heard the cries for a permanent alternative to building, and has now implemented it in the form of Fortnite Zero Build.

This new mode is playable in Solo, Duos, Trios and Squads, and completely removes the building aspect of the game, requiring you to use your weapon, item, and traversal skills to come out on top. The reaction to this has been somewhat mixed in certain circles, but we've seen a lot of praise for it on the whole. Here's one particular example:

Because there's no building in the new mode, all players now have a recharging Overshield that acts as a first line of defense. Apart from that, it's the same basic game (update: we originally stated that you can also go back to the "normal" building mode if you want to, but that's actually not the case at the moment).

Don't forget that Fortnite is free-to-play on Xbox and optimised for Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, with the ability to play at up to 120 frames per-second on both consoles — yes even the Series S! Might be worth giving it another try...

"This was one of their greatest additions ever, I'm glad they are keeping it."

  • Neo on YouTube

"This is one of the best things this game has done in ages. Ironically, building, the one mechanic that made this game unique, is what also ruined it for me. Thank you."
